I have a fly rod , a friend left it here a long time ago. He had lived in the washington area, and said he used this rig for salmon, about 5 years or so earlier. Its been on my wall - for 50 years, not kidding, he moved away in 1968. I ordered some fly leaders , fly line, backing - and am going to take this with me, so some calm morning (when I am by myself - dont want this recorded) - I am going to try to use this in the surf. For you guys that do this , what kind of flies, lures - or what do you use in the surf with a fly rod.

my favorite fly that has the biggest profile in the smallest easiest to cast fly is called a hi-tie.
Probably won't find it in a fly shop, but it's easy to tie.
You just stack pinches of bucktail, working your way up the hook.

A natural bucktail and a dyed bucktail will find all the shades you need for the fly. Orange kevlar thread, a bobbin.
This one has one stack of synthetic powder blue, and the doll eyes and epoxy head are optional.
I bet if you stop in a fly shop and show them this photo, they'll sit you down to tie a couple. Austin Angler always had an iced wash tub of beer, and sitting down at the vise with Joe Robinson always made his day more than selling something.

I've looked on the fly fishing forum page, but didnt see a lot of descriptions. "it's easy to tie" , for whom. lol. I am trained as an accountant and have all the artistic ability of that profession. I have to find flies to buy. I will run by roys one day this week - and i took a picture of this one - so maybe i can find something similar there.

This is one of the simplest flies to tie. Period.
And it fishes so effective, especially in the surf, there's just about no reason to go past it.
You can switch those blues for chartreuse and dark olive.
Donnie, I caught my first redfish on a fly rod in 1974, before people even talked about fly fishing the Texas coast.

I bet that was a kick. I used this thing - in of all places, the nueces river, casting for alligator gar. This was about that same time frame, I caught a few small ones, 2-3 footers, it was crazy fun. But I put the thing up on the wall, and forgot about it. Over the last 50 years, my friend and I would pass each other, Arizona once, somewhere else another time, but each time, forgot about his dad's fly rod. It may not work out on in the surf, but I have to give it a try.

yes, sight-fishing gar is a hoot.
Hard to hook, but they shoot 6' like a rocket to grab a fly, and if you do hook them, they make great aerial displays.
This is a longnose. I fished with Kevin Townsend on an episode of KT Diaries, and he was sight-fishing 150-lb alligator gar in a pond.
(I took him bass fishing on the middle Guadalupe and Hondo Creek)

You tie it on a regular 2x-long salt hook, size 2 up to 2/0
that's a size 2, and overall length of the fly is 3 inches

Roy's carries lots of flies very similar to this if you aren't inclined to tie your own. One of my favorite things to do is drive the beach an hour or 2 before the sun sets looking for bait exploding in the wade gut. Once you find em get out and toss a fly in and hang on. You'll get anything from reds, trout, blue fish, Spanish macs, jacks... you just never know. You'll wear yourself out catching 20 inch plus skip jack. It's a blast.

25" ladyfish caught on Lydia Ann channel.

Big jacks are amazing. One day at SP jetty, we were catching smacks over 30", and my best fly rod king - 44"

Hey Donnie, if you're not into you tying, like I am not, try Roy's and talk to Don. He's big into flyfishing in will help you with whatever you need. They've got flies that you can get for whatever species you're after. By the way my biggest fish on the fly in the surf in a 42-inch Jack. Took over 30 minutes to get in

We were bobbing the boat and casting back toward the jetties in Nov blackwater - could see the sand 25' down, and a freight-train of smacks making a sine-wave through the full water column.
The smacks will only hit on a "chernobyl strip" - rod under your arm, stripping line with both hands.

Smacks hit like a freight train, but quickly give up.
Jacks hit hard, but kings will sip a tiny fly on a slow retrieve 4' below the boat - when they know they're hooked, kings will run out 200 yds backing, and sound at the end.
Jacks immediately sound, but with either kings or jacks, you finish by lifting them - sitting with your feet on the gunwhale, pumping the rod to lift them.
I've also caught jacks on Lydia Ann beach, and they want to get back to deep water like a UPS truck.

I know guys who tie flies for relaxation, and have stacks of fly boxes they'll never use. I tie hand-to-mouth, just what I need in the fly box for an outing.

Easiest way to rig for toothy fish - leader is a 6' butt of 30-lb mason, tied to 2' of wire braid (12-15-lb) with an Allbright knot - fly attached with a crimp sleeve.

Probably what i will do - hoping to find some online and I will do that as well. Several times lately went by Roys, got as far as the parking lot , but the leg says, 'nope, not today'.

Don, Zach and Matt at Roy's can hook anyone up with flies. For the surf I have found a plain white clouser does the trick on just about everything. Jeff Wolda
