It really makes no sense sometimes when you loose a friend that lives right and the Lord decides to end it. That being said im' sure we have all lost someone that you wonder sometimes why did this have to happen to a good sole that has so much to offer to others. Some say it it is Gods plan.

Sometimes i wonder when i am out in the middle of no where fishin or huntin.

I have a ol friend in Corpus that i worked with for years, and as soon as he and his wife decided it was time to retire, he had chest pains fishin around Kates hole.

Well two days later they fillet him for a double bypass.. His Doctor told him after i think around two months to walk his supple bum off in the mornings and eevenings and change his diet, and very little alcohol consumption.

He followed doc.'s orders and then it happen again. They split him wide open again and put in a pace maker.

Now his new Doc. says dont take these walks for miles, chill out, eat right and relax.

When i lived on the Island Dr. Tom Durrell told me the way i need to behave and i did and he was right.

So what is one to do that is pushing sixty. Walk for miles or chill with a cold beer and fish when the weather is cooler and the bite is better ?

61 today, hbd to me.
I try to bicycle 100 mi/wk. Sometimes 70, 120, have hit 150 a couple of weeks. Rarely weeks without riding, but it happens.
My at rest pulse is in the low 40s, and BP the same as when I was 19.

40 miles on a bicycle burns an extra day's calories - doesn't matter how fast you go (same amount of work).
The only way I know to burn this many calories and have fun doing it.
If you can ride a couple of times/wk, you maintain your metabolism, muscle memory and endurance - your fat cells will not multiply until your metabolism drops, and anything you eat you can readily burn.
I'll admit I'm pretty much hungry all the time.

I have 4 bikes, the newest one a '98, the oldest a '57, though the mix of parts on them keeps them all current in tires, chains, etc. I do wear out bike parts.
Building bikes is one of the few things more fun than rigging kayaks - it also happens my kayak buddies are my bike buddies.
Here's my '57 Raleigh, photo taken last winter on Salado Creek greenway in San Antonio. I'll be riding it 30 mi tomorrow morning.

Tell friends how you feel about them. Tomorrow's never guaranteed. I'll be 59 in October about 13 days after what would have been Stan's birthday. I try to workout three or four times a week. I need to lose alcohol and keep watching the carbs. See alcohol for too many carbs. : )

Well, as one who has exercised and eaten about, as cautiously, as anyone over their life, except maybe one who is a veggie (?), I am of the opinion you almost cannot overcome the effects of genetics, but one's diet and exercise can enhance one's genetics. That being said, as the knowledge of our bodies increases, and the medical field techniques improve maybe genetics can be overcome somewhat, but I do not believe that is necessarily the case today. Exercise will keep you more fit, or looking better in your pine box, but it will not necessarily prolong one's life to a great extent. That is not to say obesity will not shorten ones life, which I think it will or can,and substantially, primarily due to the impact on ones heart. As one who has a pacemaker/defibrillator installed, it's installation is very un-intrusive, but extremely effective at prolonging ones life to preform very normally, thus one of the medical field's improved techniques I referenced. Life is short, as we are constantly reminded, so take care, and enjoy! May our friend Stan RIP!

I eat everything in sight and pedal it off. But I also get to claim good genes. Definitely got my dad's heart. Great ride this morning, trip into the office to load up my flash drive with this afternoon's work...(another nice thing about consulting...)
The trailhead is about a dozen blocks from my office.

It's really simple and talking about exercise, eating, etc... is a waste of time.

I learn again, every time I lose a friend, 2 simple things.

1. We are all mortal.
2. When the Good Lord calls you, it's your time to go.

As I said before "Fair winds and following seas brother, rest easy, we have the watch"

Tyler, it depends now.... pure grain alcohol ie vodcat, gin etc has 0 carbs so it just depends on what you put it in.
Put it in water and you have a 0 carb drink Confused Very Happy

don't take things for granted. none of us know how many days we have left.

tell your wife you love her, spend time with your kids and family. I had to put my 15 year old lab down last week and I was upset about taking him for granted. We all have a finite amount of time here, spend it in a way you minimize regret in your last hours.

Oil Field you words were never more true to me....
My wife died on Saturday right before my eyes..... God brought her back to life and now every day is a cherished moment.
I too put down my dog of 18 years and it actually made me cry. For years before my wife he was always my best friend, unconditionally always there for me. She has been too since we were married and I cried when this happened.
SO YES CHERISH EVERY MOMENT OF EVERY DAY YOU HAVE with your loved ones.
We were never promised tomorrow.!!!!!

yes, talking about eating and exercise is a waste of time.
running the good race is something else - God may not be done with us if we're not done with ourself.

Saw my good friend Luther on today's ride, and a trail steward stopped to check on us, and we all 3 had a good chat.
Amazing how many regular friends you make on the greenway.
My bike buddies are also my kayak buddies. Five of us have a house at Estes for four days beginning Oct 5. Moon and tides look great. A good friend from Lewisville may also make the drive for the weekend.
Lord willing, of course. Though the church-speak isn't really necessary, because we say more with our actions than our words.
When I ran a fly-fishing life group from my church for 6 years, we opened our bi-weekly outings with a prayer, and ended that with, "and put us on fish."

we also always managed to find a good lunch before we split for the afternoon

When I look back at my life I can't figure out why I'm still here - all I can figure is he's not done with me.

Turned 66 a few days ago, been through a few battles, the two I still deal with one, a ruined leg - that has me considered 'disabled' and the other is a sword of Damocles - an aortic aneurisym above my heart in a high risk area , surgically high risk to repair, over 80% 'negative outcome'. What I understand is that , if it ruptures, i have a couple of hours before i bleed out, so I could buy a house near an ER - and wait, or live, build this business, fish and hug grandkids.

And building a business, fishing and hugging my grandkids, won ( I voted - and that was the way the vote came out).

Couple of my friends give me a hard time about wading my shark line out, etc. the odds , that I would get hit by a shark swimming a bait out, versus a ruptured aneurisym - is so silly that its not a consideration.

I work on an elliptical - walking, running used to do an awesome job - but those havent happened in 3 years and 7 months now, - hoping that i get strong enough to do the elliptical regularly - and spend time out in the surf getting tossed around, that has to wash out some calories as well.

I talk to the Big Guy pretty regularly, and I have tried to tell him, i am way too busy , that I have a lot to do yet, but I have this feeling He just grins.

If I go before yall do, I will scope out the fishing spots up there , if its the other way around, I will expect a report.

ps - God likes fishermen, because fishing is an act of faith

Donnie, the report was already published:

Ezekiel 47: 7-10 (NLT)
7 Suddenly, to my surprise, many trees were now growing on both sides of the river! 8 Then he said to me, "This river flows east through the desert into the Jordan Valley, where it enters the Dead Sea. The waters of this stream will heal the salty waters of the Dead Sea and make them fresh and pure. 9 Everything that touches the water of this river will live. Fish will abound in the Dead Sea, for its waters will be healed. Wherever this water flows, everything will live. 10 Fishermen will stand along the shores of the Dead Sea, fishing all the way from En-gedi to En-eglaim. The shores will be covered with nets drying in the sun. Fish of every kind will fill the Dead Sea, just as they fill the Mediterranean.
