|
|
1. I asked about wading shoes a while back and found a pair that work BUT they stay full of sand an really bug me. They are solid enough but the sand comes in the top. My wife has a similar pair but doesnt seem to have this problem.
I have been considering using some plain old rubber boots, the 8-10 inch tall kind figure that might keep it out at the shore line BUT worry about the problems I might encounter in the 2nd gut wading and that I might just end up with sand in them out there any way.
2. I see a lot of rigs (some sharkers, some not) riding with vertical rod racks in the back of their beds.
I know its no big deal to go down the beach with the poles vertical, I dont think you will never drive fast enough for it to matter.
But the question is can you drive the highway 75 mph for 3 hours with them like that. I am going to build some rod holders and if its bad for the rods to ride that long that fast vertically Ill need to make it where it can drop to an angle or have to take them out.
I just kind of wanted them in place when I put them in the truck.
3. I think I already know the answer to this one, seems common sense enough with all I hear going on but,
How safe is it to leave your camp site, tent and such, alone while you go another 10-20 miles down the beach. Thought maybe it was easier on a 2 night trip not to have to pack up and reset everything. But with all the theft I hear about in other places doesnt seem to be the brightest idea. _________________ Whatever your hands find to do, do it with all your might. Look at Columbia, Huk and some of the other fishing apparel companies. many of them make a shoe that looks like a sneaker but has drain holes. I picked up pair of the ones Columbia makes at the outlet for a steal and they work really well.
In regards to leaving a campsite I do it all the time and have never had a problem. Last time down I left my camp at 8:00 am and headed to the jetty and returned around 4 and no issues. Others may have had different experiences with this but I have never had an issue at PINS or any campground i have ever been to. |

I just use my neoprene regular wading boots or go barefoot. It might be a mental thing but you can tell instantly when your toes go from sand to across the soft almost slimy wing of a ray lol so I prefer barefoot unless the little crabs are out in full force.
I have no idea on the 3 hour trip but mine ride vertical off the front bumper for short periods and have no problem. I do recommend covers for your reels if they are gonna be on the front and worth anything or you'll get stuff flying up and hitting them or splattering on them.
I have not left my camp without someone staying behind to watch it. I wouldn't leave anything valuable out in the open, like a yeti. But tents, tables and such should be no issue. _________________ Great captains, the stuff of legend, are made not by what they have caught, but by what they have given back. |

| I pull the reels and just leave the rods in the holders on long trips, road grit gets into the workings otherwise. Esp if you drive thru any construction zones. |

I was thinking of putting the rack in the bed behind the cab. I figured the reels should be fairly protected there. I can grab what I want as I drive down the beach, but didnt know if it would damage the poles in a 3 hour run down the highway at 75 mph.
I know I could always put them in the bed and then in the holders when I got there but was hoping to just put them in once and done till I got back home.
I figured maybe I could make the mount pivotable so as to drop them to a 45ish angle for the highway but seemed a lot of trouble if it wasnt necessary.
So I guess the ultimate question is would 75mph for 3 hours steady hurt the rod itself if standing straight up in the bed, reels excluded? _________________ Whatever your hands find to do, do it with all your might. (Fishing is one of those things ) |

| On the rods at 75 mph. In the last couple of years I have gotten more rocks on my windshields than ever before in my many years of driving. If a rock hit some of todays brittle rods I would imagine it would shatter them or damage them beyond repair. Tilting them at a 45 or so angle to the rear would be your best bet. However, that being said, I have seen guys running at traffic speeds, north on HWY 37 with numerous huge rods on the front of their truck, so it is done, and hopefully with no damage to their equipment. |

| I wouldnt leave any high dollar rods in the front mount rod holders. A rock or bird impact could be bad news. I always have mine in the cab of the truck till I get to Corpus or on the beach. Then I put them in the surf-mate and putt around. |

I use several types. Wading shoes mostly, sometimes crocs, and a lot of times just barefoot. I wouldnt suggest rubber boots if your going out far. I think those would be a problem if you ever got knocked down or had to swim!
I put mine in the bed till i hit the sand. I've had them get covered in bugs and dirt before.
I've never had anybody mess with my stuff but i never leave anything really valuable out. |
