I posted this on the hunting page and thought I'd post it here also.. I've been a member since 2006 and I am retired and finally moving down that way. Looking to buy property in Duval or Live Oak county, 10+ acres, to build a retirement farm/ranch on.. Looking for input about the area.. Yes I speak a small amount of Spanish, been in Austin way tooooo long, don't mind putting buckshot in trespassers supple bum and welcome friends anytime around my camp. I'll be living in a new travel trailer for a while and getting things set up for the chickens I have, goats I want. Also be much closer for those pomp windows and good days in the surf.. So tell something good, bad or indifferent about the area.. I'll read and listen to it all!!

I don't know anything about those areas but I wanted to say congrats on retirement and hope you find what you are looking for.

Congrats Harheadted! I know there are areas that way. The rub on Duval is that it is shot out. I have no idea but that's the impression I get. They say all the folks on the smaller places shoot anything that walks so they can get a deer.

Live Oak is good area from what I hear. Duvall and Jim Wells areas are shot out and high in illegal traffic. As well as other crimes, but that's everywhere.

Thanks guys. I'm ok if it's kinda shot out on deer, I may be weird but I find little piggies very tasty though.. I'm coming down Wednesday to look at some of the properties. They are actually 12-15 miles NW of San Diego.. I am bringing my chickens and looking to raise some rabbits and a goat or two on the property, maybe grow a few maters also... I really just want to be out of the Austin area.. I figure to be close enough to be able to run to the coast for a day fishing trip but far enough away to avoid any storm surges or coastal flooding.. Mostly looking to be able to enjoy the peace and quiet of country life..

Yes, around San Diego is pretty much shot out, but there is lots of dove. We have been hunting whitewings there for about 20 years. Laughing

Land in Live Oak Co cost more for a reason.
It's overall better. The county is better ran, Duval and Jim Wells is still very "old school" hold over.
I personally think the land in Live Oak is much prettier, real trees are more common.
As mentioned, Jim Wells and Duval are both shot out and heavily poached, a friend's son would talk about how the kids in High school would openly talk about plans on what county roads they would be hunting that weekend night.

I had a little place in Duval county, I miss it, but it never would have become the hunting place I had hoped it would be.

Thanks again, Hunting isn't a priority for the property. I am more of a fisherman. But I do hunt some. Mostly hoping for somewhere I can get a few hogs each year.. We also race, dirt tracks for now, and the property there is close to where we go in Pleasanton and close enough to run Corpus so that is a big plus. I would love to be able to hit the beach or the N. Jetty at Port A with just a 1 hour drive or so.. Keep on with he comments because it helps me understand what living there might be like a little more..

Should look up in Refugio co, San patricio, Bee, Goliad, All of these will have better trees, grass n better topsoil With most areas having plenty of pig's.

Refugio, and San Pat would even put him closer to the water. Goliad is a great small town with small town politics running hard. Bee has the prison system running there and as such the families of the inmates follow. Thus issues there.

Thanks for the input everyone. I went down and looked at the ranch property I was talking about in Duval county.. There were plenty of recent tracks on the ranch, deer, hogs and some bobcat tracks along a wet weather creek there. I will be getting 27.5 acres with a well, elec and a tank on it. The tank was covered up with tracks and signs of deer and hogs..The ranch is behind a locked gate that you go thru to get to the properties,, It's about 15-20 miles nw of San Diego, 50 miles or so to Corpus and very isolated. I will be the first one out there living full time.. Looking forward to getting the heck outta Austin. I'll only come to town once or twice a month unless I'm heading out fishing.. Don't mind the hour drive to corpus or the additional 30-45 minutes to the beaches..
