I was wondering what people do to help with mosquitos while camping on PINS? I know if there is no breeze the big mosquitoes out there can eat you up. We will be sleeping under the stars so the only thing I can think is wear clothing to cover exposed skin and spray bug spray everywhere else.

Check out the mixed sun screen and mosquito spray stuff - it seems to work. But , and this is one big but, on nights when they are thick and the wind isnt on your side, they will drive you crazy just flying in your face and all over you, even with spray on.

About a year ago, I saw a young couple who were up to more than fishing - in the surf, come walking out of the water, and just as they got to their camp - they took off running, throwing stuff in their car, and left a fire going and took off. I was out in the surf pretty far - and was just watching , to be sure they were ok, of course, and started cussing them about leaving a fire going. I walked in out of the water - and about 10 20 feet from the water got swarmed by mosquitos, I did the same thing the young couple did, though I didnt have a fire or as much exposed skin.

From what you are saying Donnie, they dont bother you if you are at the waters edge?

Me I have always been an advocate for Deepwoods off ever since the army.
Still it doesn't stop the incessant buzzing in my ears.
For sleeping we have a tent, if the wind permits setup, however I figure if wind is that bad mosquitoes wont be.
Im starting to itch and scratch just thinking about it.

There is generally little you can do with those salt water mosquitos Best advice is 40% deet. That, and if they are really thick, make sure you take complete cover (i.e.., in a vehicle or camper) for an hour or two after sunset and an hour before sunrise. That's when they'll carry you over the dunes...

I grew up down on the coast over in the Galveston area during the 60's into the 70's.
I remember one night while we were out fishing I went to the truck for something and when I came back I saw 2 of our average sized skeeters hovering around my friend and I heard one ask the other shall we eat him here or take him with us?
Those were the days and NO I dont want to relive those.

They havent yet - but i would bet if the wind ever dies down (dream on ) they would get you even out in the water. But that day, they didnt touch me - or the amorous couple to the north, but they started running not long after they got out of the water, and about 20 minutes , so did i.

Camp away from the dunes.

Cover up. Deet up.

Put a light away from the camp-sometimes they will go to that.

Fire. Cedar tends to do better than other woods.

Under the stars? I did that at Matagorda once. Once. Cover up and put some netting over you-but I still think they will get you. I could swear they were biting through the padding on zero gravity chair.

On the plus side, old school sunscreen, works on horse flies while Off will not.

By old school I mean the usual stuff you buy at Wallyworld. The all natural stuff or kid stuff tends not to work.

I also just heard a report on NPR that indicated that mosquitoes remember if you swat at them and communicate this to their friends and tend to stay away more than if you are passive.

Really, I'm just spit balling here.

I, for one, welcome our new mosquito overlords.
