Looking at the weather report for the upcoming weekend and it looks like some pretty heavy wind on Fri and Saturday. If the forecast changes to show lighter winds I plan to head down Friday.
With that said I have the usual questions:
How doe sthe water look?
How are driving condition on the beach?
What is everyone catching? |

Went out to PINS this morning - sunrise for a few hours. Driving conditions are fair to good first 4-5 miles but beware the soft pockets, there are many! After about the 6th or 7th it started looking pretty dicey so I didn't go much further bc I haven't upgraded to 4x4 yet . Also, it's really narrow in a lot of places at high tide. Watch out for campers especially with oncoming traffic. Can't speak for anything further than the 7MM though.
Water was clear and green for at least a couple hundred yards, very little weed. Temperature was just about perfect. Could see straight to the bottom all the way to the first sandbar. Personally didn't feel like there was much of a current (just on the back end of high tide), but when I threw lines it was proven otherwise. I had 4oz "digger" weights on my 8' and 10'; neither held very well. Wind was a little high but manageable, so I believe it was all current past the first sandbar. Strong onshore flow.
I threw a few lures but I'm still pretty sure I haven't mastered the art of presentation yet, so nothing on those. Then out went the big boys. Had FishBites EZ Crab on one, Dead finger mullet on the other. Neither had a single hit, most likely because the weights didn't hold very good.
Later I started fishing for smallies on my light rig to see what was out there. Double drop rig with EZ Shrimp on the bottom and half a real shrimp on top. First hit was a mid-size whiting (too big for bait, too small to fillet). He SWALLOWED the EZ Shrimp, hook, and half the leader. Had to operate. I think he made it.
Back out again caught this big ol' monster on the real shrimp this time. Might be my personal Whiting best. It slowed down after that hit though and I couldn't collect a feast of monsters, so I let him live to see another day.
Fella at the bait shop said the reports coming in from the surf are picking up steadily though, and it's expected to improve later this week (even with high winds). So if you do come, good luck and hope you do better than me!
Also a side note: This Saturday is Beach to Bay, so you may want to consider that in your planning. The island will be a mess.
I've got family coming down next week, and I'm hoping the surf will be red hot by then. I think it's already cooking when you hit it at the right times, but yeah, I'm excited. Summer fishin' is so close! _________________ All things will pass. Have a Blessed day. |

Thanks, the wind is what concerns me. Not so much from a fishing aspect but it is a pain camping out there for 2-3 days with winds over 20MPH which right is what is forecast. |

Yep. I've done the tent thing in that ind of wind. IF you can manage to get it up, good luck keeping it anchored. Bring some big rocks to put over the stakes. _________________ All things will pass. Have a Blessed day. |

Tent tip: Use the landscaping spikes that you can get at Lowes/Home Depot. The 18 inch ones work fine, though we use the 24 inch for the army tents. The spikes hold in the sand without any problem and in just about any wind. Some tie wire through the eye holes at the top will keep things from slipping too. Just bring some tennis balls slashed with a knife to put over the ends-- otherwise you'll end up with gashes in your leg from sideswiping them in the dark....just sayin...

Here's what I do to anchor stuff down. It works really well.
I bury a stick with some paracord around it in the sand (about 6 inches deep) and tie off to that. The stick can be surprisingly small if you bury it enough. This will hold a 10x10 tarp in a 20 mph wind no problem. Then when you're done leave the stick buried, pull the paracord out from around the stick, good to go. _________________ Great captains, the stuff of legend, are made not by what they have caught, but by what they have given back. |

Another tip is to take a shovel and pile up the sand around the base of your tent and up a couple inches on your walls. Stops the wind from blowing underneath. Always has worked for me. _________________ "When the going gets tough the tough get going" |

REIO sells sand anchors. They are like little parachutes that you tie to the corners, dig a hole, fill them with sand and cover. They work great and saved my tent on multiple occasions |
