Hello everyone,

I have a little 2.5 hp suzuki 4 stroke that's about 9 years old. I don't have a hull for it so every 3 months or so I put the engine in a 5 gallon bucket and run it for a few minutes to keep the motor happy.

Lately I've noticed the water in the bucket takes on a smokey color after starting the engine. Once I remove the engine from the bucket a black ring is left at the water line.

I suspect gear oil is leaking from the lower unit? How to I go about fixing this issue?

Thanks!

Not gear oil, that has a milky look in water.

Your problem is incomplete fuel burn coming out of the exhaust. Sounds like it's time to clean out the carb and maybe take a look at the spark plug.

Run it with some liquid soap in the bucket to make that easier to clean off.

To make double sure, back out the lower unit drain plug a bit and see if you get clean or contaminated gear oil
