Question has any right handers bought left handed conventional style reels and if so How did it work out for you.
I am considering buying a left handed conventional thinking I might like it better.
I have used left handed spinning reels most of my life.
I have a bait caster and 2 penn conventionals right handed.
I am right handed but have always been more comfortable with the left handed spinning reels. My wifes are right handed and feel wierd. _________________ Whatever your hands find to do, do it with all your might. (Fishing is one of those things ) |

A left handed reel is much easier for me, a natural right hander, when fishing topwater lures that need walking the dog. Doing the rod twitch to walk the dog with my stronger and more coordinated right hand is easier to get the proper rhythm, and is less fatiguing. Also, it is nice casting right handed, then not having to switch hands after each cast, as a right hander would do fishing with a right handed reel. I know other people that do this as well.
I use a left handed Shimano Curado bait casting reel, or a 3000 series spinning reel for topwaters, and all other fishing I use right handed bait casting or conventional reels. |

Natural right hander. Started on Left Hand Casting/Conventional rigs about 20 yrs ago. That's all I use except for Penn Senator type rigs. Much more consistent/accurate with LJH. And I developed carpal tunnel in the right hand. No problem with the LH rigs _________________ The early bird gets the worm but the second mouse gets the cheese |

| Wow I never thought about it that way. My conventional reels have the handle on the right and my spinning reels the handles are on the left. I cast right handed. Guess thats why I like my spinners better. Maybe my next conventional will be left handed..... Thanks. |

I'm 68, right handed, and have been using left hand wind reels for about 40 years. It is much more natural and didn't take any time getting used to it. It is a real PIA when you have to toss the rod back and forth twice for each cast you make with a right hand reel. _________________ Now that food has replaced my sex life I can't even get into my own pants!!!!!!!!

I cast bait and fly rod southpaw, and love RHW reels for that reason.
And have always cast spinning tackle the way they're designed, RH cast, LH retrieve.
I have to switch spinning reel handles for my daughter. She would make a great golden age angler. Casts RH, and changes hands for RH retrieve, in the convention of Doc Henshall. |

| Tried a right hand model for a few months, never could get used to it. They have it backwards IMO. |

I kept thinking about it and that seemed to be logical to me.
What prompted it was I saw a brand new penn fathom for a bid of $60 when retail was 279. Just didnt want something I might regret. _________________ Whatever your hands find to do, do it with all your might. (Fishing is one of those things ) |

I resemble that remark! Right handed myself, but as above, working the rod with my right arm/hand and reel with the left is MUCH more coordinated and natural for me. _________________ Dave

Makes sense to me. I get used to right handed reeling on baitcasters but it seems a waste of motion having to switch hands back and forth casting. _________________ Like Corpusfishing.com on Facebook! |

Like the others, I came to the same realization many years ago. Grew up on left hand spinning reels when that was the only option. When I switched to bait cast reels, RHR just didn't feel right and swapping hands to cast and retrieve seemed illogical. So I bought a LHR Curado and never looked back. Even my brother eventually saw the light and took up the habit.
My only exception is on my long surf rods. They are RHR. Trying the same theory, I picked up a LHR Abu 6500 and it's not working out as I'm having a hard time getting used to it. I think it has something to do with the relation of the location of the reel to my body. _________________ "Money will buy you a fine dog, but only love can make him wag his tail." - Kinky Friedman
