What Tournament was going on this weekend south of Bob Hall? It was wall-to-wall shark rigs all the way past the Bowl, and man did they have the entrance at Access Rd. 6 churned up! Water got browner and browner the further south you traveled, and there was some purple-ish / oily plankton bloom happening in the surf. Fair amount of weed, so conditions were not great. [edited in - Plus that last front was really tough on the Spring migration, as there were LOTS!! of dead birds scatter about, with many orioles mixed in.]
Now my observation. The beachface south of Bob Hall had a steep drop right at the tide line, almost like what you would see before Little Shell?!?! And the scallops and furrows of the beachface was far more like way down south that what I'm used to seeing from just about everywhere north of PINS. It was ..... different ..... for that area. |

Fishing 4 Autism
It was pretty crowded all down PINS too. Mansfield jetties were a zoo. |

saw that yesterday south of bob hall all the way to the sticks...that area was flat and featureless last year, and now it has some decent structure...

Thanks. From what I saw around the Bowl and points south, they were a well behaved group. Many camps policed up nicely on their way out. Good to see things packed in AND packed out. |

True That becky.... I saw a few EPIC spits with pelicans working overtime in the 2nd gut. Maybe there is something to the hypothesis that the 'beach' structures of Big Shell and Little Shell are slowly making their way N. ??? |

The sticks are those posts that run out into the water - there are a set on either side of the malaquite area, the one to the north, is the boundary for pins (padre island national seashore, by the way) , and then the set of sticks on the other side of the malaquite area, is right where the pavement ends and the sand begins - 60 something miles farther south, and you are at the cut, the mansfield cut.
Regarding the Bowl , I dont know , my kids all know about it - and from their comments - didnt really want me to know where it was. I know its between the north sticks and bob hall pier, a party area I would imagine. Not a party animal, just like to catch a whiting or two, and anything that eats them. Besides me. _________________ Don - permanent prescription of salt water therapy. |

Neither are on PINS (well, at least the North Sticks). From Bob Hall Pier, the Bowl is ~3 miles south. There are two big signs now that say "NOT AN EXIT" on either side. The Bowl used to be the place for unofficial off-roading/4 Wheeling in the dunes, but that has since been shut down.
The 'sticks' are another 5 miles down, at the northern boundary of PINS where you have to turn off the beach. Not to be confused with the 'other' sticks that went in a few years ago, on the real northern boundary of PINS. That set has a gap you can drive through. The 'Sticks' you can't. |

Hi There CS,
got a email from Alex over the Kills and Spills office on that whole deal....it was present offshore mid PINS last week as well....
All,
Thank you for forwarding the photos. This appears to be a blue-green algal bloom identified as trichodsmium sp. I have included a link to some images that should help. This was also observed along the beaches of Mustang Island over the weekend and reported as a pollution complaint.
https://www.google.com/search?tbm=isch&q=trichodesmium&chips=q:trichodesmium,online_chips:trichodesmium+bloom&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjNlOzCz-TaAhXkY98KHcZPC4QQ4lYIKSgD&biw=1057&bih=872&dpr=1
Not to jinx us, but this has been identified as a precursor to our favorite algae of the red variety
Thanks.

Many thanks for the update.
Ahhhhhhhh...... Good 'Ol Sea Straw.
And he's right about the whole precursor thing. Allows for more Nitrogen to be fixed directly from the atmosphere, and used by 'other organisms' that I shall not name.... But, it's early in the season for such nonsense, so 'BE GONE' ... varmint! |

I had wanted to share CS, I know your knowledge is so much greater than mine on these things....anyways, thanks again for sharing it, I had no idea it was so far north until you mentioned it and then Alex reported that folks were sending in pictures of it. I had thought it was just a down south thing. It was so thick a mile off the beach down in mid PINS that there were actually jacks hiding under it. _________________ Protect Padre at all costs for future generations to use and enjoy and never forget our freedoms aren't free.
