Check this out - read the clip from IGFA below, this guy measured a bit over 31 inches - but I hurried through the measuring - i was planning to release him until I saw the blood coming from his gills - so I iced him, and then fileted actually , the book says males dont get this big - so it must have been a female, which makes it worse, missing possibly a record and killing a egg layer.
And now this...

| Ive caught several over the 28in mark with some around what you got but felt like they were more around the 6-9lb range. 13 pound record is giant. Great catch tho and some good ceviche if interested in that kinda thing. |

My measurement - was half/a&& at best, the fish was flopping around and I threw the ruler down. So - it could be a couple inches either side of the mark. I just was curious because it looked to be just a little shorter than a 39 inch red i caught last month, but it was around 31 inch -that would be the best that I could say, if I would have to swear to its length. _________________ Don - permanent prescription of salt water therapy. |

The local record is 34.5" but only 8'ish lbs.
IFGA 31" and 13 lbs?!?!
Something ain't right in one of those length/weight relationships.... Even fully gravid, I can't see that much egg mass in a body shape of a Smack. |

On top of that, this record dated from 1987 - which means pre-internet. So since it really isnt 'on the internet' , how could it be trusted ?
I was at Roy's yesterday afternoon, and I was talking with a couple of guys there - he looked it up on the IGFA site too, and was surprised. He said he was pretty sure he had caught a couple larger than that one.
For saturday, I thought catching it was cool, but for my day, my biggest excitement was actually seeing a shark in the close gut. Stopped at Roy's because "I am going to need a bigger " leader for the rig I call my shark rig.
On another note, the weeds started coming enough to be really annoying - this was between 9 and 10 last night (sunday 29th). _________________ Don - permanent prescription of salt water therapy. |

| it's not uncommon for TX state records to exceed IGFA - I'm sure we got into smacks that size at South Padre jetties one Thanksgiving - they were certainly the largest I've ever seen. |

Donnie, I have noticed that you have changed your sig several times as of late.
You used to be the whiting slayer, then king hardhead .... I mean the hardhead king. What shall we call you now? The Big Mac Smacker
Congrats on a great fish. _________________ Whatever your hands find to do, do it with all your might. (Fishing is one of those things ) |

I probably should stay 'the whiting slayer' - thats pretty safe. The King Hardhead title - seemed to be challenging hard heads - and that title had actually been bestowed on me by my brother Randy - though I have to say, I did earn it - almost all on one day down at the cut, when ever large hardhead in the southern Gulf lined up to have the honor of being caught by me.
Any honors on the mackeral catch, i have to decline. I had some friends call and ask, "i know you are learning beach structures and water movement, what made you decide on that specific point - which was certainly hot - for fishing for macks ?". The truth must come out - I was driving along when the call of nature is what really caused me to stop. On walking back from the dunes, I noticed some fingerlings jump, I cast netted some - and then ... history, at least in my house.
I thought maybe there was something to the call of nature issue - and that maybe next time, I would drive until it occurred - but .... nah. I have to put that catch down to old fashioned luck, and being out there so much that the old 'even a blind squirrel eventually finds a nut' saying came to mind.
So regarding the signature, lover of the island, etc..... seems more appropriate. _________________ Don - permanent prescription of salt water therapy. |
