Spring is finally here and we are finally getting into the 'spring cycle'. People were hoping it would have taken place earlier than it did, however such a harsh winter has delayed much of activity and arrival of various species. We are JUST now officially getting into the transition.
During the past month, generally the surf has been big with limited inshore water clarity. When the small handful of days have allowed it to calm, we have been crushing it with good sharks on deployed baits. We have been hammering a lot of bull reds and smaller sharks (all on Catchsharks.com Jack Slammer leaders on Breakaway HDX rods). For all the Big Ugly Black Drum action, we have been getting them all on the Catchsharks.com Drum Master leaders.
Charters have been interesting as I have had some of my favorite clients, a pair of GREAT Grandparents whose thirst for adventure never ceases to amaze me. They have had a couple recent trips which produced an array of Reds and Sharks. I had Great Grandma harnessed in to a BIG shark she fought for nearly 30 minutes before the hook pulled on the bar. She never gave up and shortly after landed a winter Sandbar shark. The next trip I had a 5 year old boy have the time of his life hammering pompano while waiting on sharks. On a non-charter trip, Alexis and I took advantage of the mid-week weather window and hammered 21 sharks while field testing some new Catchsharks.com Leaders! Sharks were all tagged and released with genetic sampling done. Things are finally starting to get active in the surf and I am beyond excited!
There is still some availability left for this spring as the blacktips, bulls, and scalloped hammers will be in frenzy mode. Jackfish bite has yet to materialize in the surf due to dirty water but should change in a week or so. I am taking bookings for spring and summer already so contact ASAP to reserve your spot!
Remember, for charter info - if you want the best Padre Surf Fishing, contact myself at Ocean Epics for Shark and Big Game, or Jeff Wolda at Padre Island ADVENTURES for light tackle action! Feel free to email/text in regards to trips.
Have fun and watch out for April rain, fog, and high tides!!
Here are a load of recent pics in no particular order...
