Called a Launcha in the story. I've been seeing them for years in South America but never knew that they had a name. My grandfather had one made of wood back in the 60's. Deep Vee hull, plenty of capacity, pretty much indestructible.

It looks like it would be the perfect bare-bones near shore boat. I even have an extra 90 hp tiller motor I could put on it.

Commonly called a Panga, or Imemsa

There is one with a center console (with tower controls deck) on Laguna Shores parked in front of a house

Love my Panga. Runs shallow handles the chop with little power needed. The only negative I have found is it can be tippy if you have a few people on one side.

Thanks! Using this I found a dealer in Houston that imports them. Unfortunately mostly the 25' sizes or bigger. I sent him an email to see if he can bring in anything much smaller.

Yeah it is a panga... the Imemsa is a brand of panga made in Mexico that you can get shipped in the US thru a dealer- the guy next to Wind N Wave in the bluff used to be a dealer I believe but not sure if he still is. There are 2 different types of pangas: the true OG panga that you see in countries south of here that can plane out with minimal HP and then the Americanized ones with a wider beam, deeper V, and typically a lil overpowered. That one panga off laguna chores is CLEAN! I believe it is a local fishing guides boat.

Renn Tolman has a design similar called a Standard or a Widebody. Here's a picture of his design called a Jumbo that I finished late last summer:

It was a pretty straight forward build and is very stable and efficient. Top is 36.6 knots with a 2 stroke 150 yamaha.

Here's a couple of you tubes of the boat build:
