In short, is Island Italian Restaurant open. I know they were damaged from Harvey but wondering if/when they will reopen.

There food is top notch especially after a long day surf fishing.

Can't help you as far as whether they're open or not being that I just got back from New Mexico yesterday but I must concur that their food is top-notch.

Last few times I've driven by there, the work appears to be on-going. The roof looks complete, the sign in front has been replaced, and there is always a truck or two out front, so hopefully it's a good sign of progress.

Like others have mentioned, it's one of my absolute go-to places for Friday date night. Really missing it.

I do - I was not a big fan of italian food - but Frank's was great. I worked in New York City quite a lot up to about 10 years ago, and - there I was a big fan of italian - actually my clients/partners there were sicilian and they knew every neighborhood restaurant in new jersey, as well as in the city. I believe every place, like old family mexican places here, started with hugs, embrace, chef comes out, the whole thing, and then talk, before ordering food. And english, while it was spoken, was not the language of the place. Smile

Franks is still there on Leopard. I have never been. I am watching carbs and rarely ate spaghetti anyway! Pizza I love!

The original owner was Frank Toras (sp?). If I remember correctly, my dad new him from the Marines. I could be mistaken there, but sure seems like what I remember. After they retired sometime in the late 70's to early/mid 80's, Farnk and his wife dropped thru Little Rock a couple of times on their sight seeing trips.

Funny.... going to Franks back when I was a kid was a big deal to EVERYONE in our extended family but me! At that time, spaghetti/tomato/meat sauce did nothing for me..... Embarassed Tastes change, and now I love a good sauce and even make my own.

One thing I do remember about Frank was that he REALLY put the garlic to everything, and I LOVE garlic! Most "Garlic bread" is bread with a little garlic. Frank's was almost the opposite, and GOOD!!!! Shocked Cool

Both Frank's and Old Mexico were only a short distance from my Grandma's house on Granada, which was also the place of my birth! Wink

I moved to Corpus at 1980 and I've only been to Frank's once. Not very impressed. But I kind of relate to what Donny said. I grew up in New Jersey and Italian restaurants there are usually a mom-and-pop hole in the wall run by the mafia. True Italian fare.

I MUCH prerred Old Mexico!!! Very Happy

Your deal with Italian food kinda sounds like mine with a REALLY good Hogie. I've never had one that was what I remember from my childhood, anywhere except for the east coast. Just putting all the "right" stuff on a "Hogie" bun does NOT make a Hogie! Rolling Eyes Jersey Mikes gets close, but still doesn't do justice to the real McCoy!

Back in the early 60' my dad was transferred to Quantico VA. He had a Marine buddy of Italian heritage who got out of the Corps and opened "Leon's Hogies". He made his own bread and did everything himself with no help. The place didn't last for long, but is still THE BEST I've ever eaten, with a very close second being a hole in the wall Hogie shop in Ocean City Maryland.

One of the top 5-6 things I've ever put in my mouth! Shocked
