|
|
I had a little work around the house to do but the word was out that Roadkill Willie was having a little dove hunt with the chance at a Sandhill Crane or two out at his Ranchito on Knolle Farms Saturday 1/20/2018
I hesitated knowing the usual tasks I needed to get done but after that week of cold and cloudy days the sunny weather told me to get out there. So I did around 3:20pm.
We helped Willie sight in his new black hate machine LOL! New Rock River LR15 EOP with the 24 inch bull barrel. I thought the loud noises would scare off the big Sandhills that fly over in groups on his property.
Just before sundown we headed out to his fence line and had two groups fly over and for some reason I was able to knock one down.
For seven seasons we have been getting the free sandhill crane permits at the TPW office and 4 sandhills have been harvested all by Roadkill Willie until I managed to get this one! Thanks Willie! _________________ Like Corpusfishing.com on Facebook! |

Thats cool! They are all over our place in Victoria. I can just never seem to be at the right place with the right weapon. They land at the deer feeders pretty often.
Im VERY curious to see your report of how they are to eat. Always heard how good they are. |

Been shooting them for years. Put out decoys in a grain field if you want to improve your chances. Make sure you are fully camoed and totally still until you are ready to shoot. You can call them in like ducks and geese.
Grill it just like you would a ribeye. You won't taste much difference except no fat. _________________ Now that food has replaced my sex life I can't even get into my own pants!!!!!!!!

I haven't eat this one yet but true they taste like lean steak. Sous viding the thighs and legs(which most hunters discard) right now 149 degrees for 24hrs then will try to fry! _________________ Like Corpusfishing.com on Facebook! |

Saw Sandies by the thousands along the Platte River flyway. Was illegal to soot them at the time. Needless to say I have never shot one. Eager to find out how they taste. _________________ "I do hunt and I do fish and I do not apologize to anyone that I hunt and fish." - Norman Schwarzkopf |

Roadkill Willie and Becky joined Kelle and I for dinner last night. On the menu were sous vide crane leg quarters. 30hrs at 149 degrees then fried like chicken. Chicken fried crane breast medallions. Mashed potatoes and gravy made with the duck stock I made. The leg quarters were good but still way too tough for the effort. I know they can be made to pull apart though I think it might take two days in a crock pot on low. Seriously!
Next up were sandhill crane breasts and duck breasts cooked medium rare and topped with cremini mushrooms cooked with shallots etc and deglazed with red wine in the same pan that the breasts were sauteed in. It was good!
I cooked from 5:30p until 8:50p and forgot to take even one pic! _________________ Like Corpusfishing.com on Facebook! |
