I had the opportunity to duck hunt with son, Bryan and two of his good friends at the Kainer Ranch out in New Ulm, TX. Where is New Ulm? Between La Grange and Brenham in Austin County, TX.
We got there at sunset on Friday and prepared for the duck hunt the next morning on a nearby farm pond. The weather was cold and the sky was clear as we headed out at 6:30am. There would be no need for decoys as we set up behind some brush under some live oak trees. The day previously, Trey, our host, had seen about a dozen gadwall on the pond when he drove in. He mentioned we could have have 30 ducks show up and that would be it for the day or they could come in steady in groups of 3 to 6.
The playing field for the day.
It was 26 in the morning and Trey pointed out what he called an ice rose. A cool little object made when a break in a plant slowly oozes out moisture and freezes.
Well the ducks came in in groups of 6, 3, and some singles for about an hour. Gadwalls, Ringnecks and a Wigeon or two. Shooting was good and we downed 17.
I sat out Sunday morning's hunt to a smaller pond about 10 minutes away on another piece of property. Good thing for me as it was 22 degrees! Results were similar with more gadwall and ringnecks (below drake ringneck) for a total of 11 ducks.
We rounded out the morning with a little target practice. Thanks to Trey Redding for the wonderful weekend.

| One way I really like cooking Ducks is to soak it in a marinade of 50/50 Italian dressing and orange juice for about an hour or two. Then throw it on the grill and quick grill it comes out non gamey in taste and tender |
