Just an FYI. It looks like a fishing ban has been issued.
Maybe others in the know will post up more info.

Looks like it covers most places - except for pins. Fish in the surf - have plenty of room to escape the cold, in the laguna madre, not so.

Yes sir, red tide closes the surf, not freezing temps. Everyone knows it never freezes on the surf side!

Closing the deep water areas helps to keep the fish slaughter down. As we fishermen all know the fish especially big sow trout seek deeper waters with muddy bottoms to survive the frigid temps.

Making barge traffic stop moving in the ICW mandatory and not voluntary during a freeze event will save more fish that anything. The mud at the bottom of the ICW holds warmth and continued being turned over as barge traffic travels the ICW is no good.
Undisturbed deep water and mud IMO is the best.

Sage words indeed! Last big freeze I did a post-event survey in the Land Cut and there were NUMEROUS chopped up turtles and big drum from barge traffic littering the sides. Undisturbed is the key.

During the freeze of 1989 I was heading to Nighthawk to hunt Ducks. As I cross the intercostal and the Deep Cuts leading back there you can see big fish down at the bottom with the water being crystal clear. While hunting a barge or two went by and on my way home all those fish were now floating either dead or dying on the surface of the water. Concur with what you said Mike.

Both crew boat traffic and barge traffic have contributed to the loss of alot of
fish from the Laguna Madre & Baffin Bay areas during a freeze event as far back as I can remember.
The cause is known, why can't there be a solution?

Hey CS is TP&W still using gill-net survey in the spring to determine large trout numbers?

There IS a solution; Dr. McKee and CCA-Texas has been working with the barge companies for years, and they have been very receptive and extremely helpful by not running during the really cold temps...

you want to see that in action? look south of the JFK right now; you'll see two double-wides tied up just sitting there..they've been there since saturday, and are supposed to be there until it warms up....

progress has been made, and continues to be made by the barge companies willingness to help protect the resource...

FYI, the only closure in our area is Lake Padre and the Padre Island canals...everywhere else is open to fishing...

The last freeze they continued to run the ICW. Until it is mandatory they will continue to run the ICW.
No solution has been reached at this time.

that's correct, no PERMANENT solution has been reached...they have been doing Ok with compliance (not 100%, you're correct)...sometimes they "forget"...

the solution is easy, have to get TPWD to create a law, and then enforce it...along with the barge companies blessing through the Texas gov't in Austin...

and you're right, one barge going up or down the ICWW could kill more trout in one fell swoop than people using cast nets with no limits at the places that they closed off to the recreational fishermen...

The short of it is, Yes. The split seasons (Spring and Fall) both contribute information as to the population sizes, and the difference in the Spring and Fall catch rates conveys some information on overall angling pressure.
