I was at PINS yesterday (11/16) and caught 2 nice skipjack about 20"-22" long. How do I bait these? I remember members saying these are redfish candy so I want to maximize my opportunity when I cath them. Great acrobatic fighters too. I cut the fish into sections about 2 inches wide steaks but no bites. The baits looked really big. We did manage to get 2 slot reds, one undersize red, and a nice bunch of whiting so the day wasn't lost. Later in the afternoon the surf started to pick up and get messy so we packed up around 3 and went home.

Fileting a piece of the skipjack off and use it like that - I have had days in the last few months where that worked - but I also once in a while did use chunks -
and would catch reds, but also sharks.

The filets work for me - if anything is going to work - those will. But then there are days when both, pieces of filets and chunks will work.

Would you say the skipjack fillet or chunk is usually a better bait than the frozen mullet bought at the bait shop? I say usually because it seems like sometimes they hit some baits and leave others alone. Right now I am using live shrimp and dead mullet until I can put in some time to figure out my cast net throwing.

Fish appetites, just like ours, change. Just have to see what is on their menu for that day. Also where the eat will change. When I set out three rods I put one on the backside of the the bar in the front side of the bar and in the middle of the gut. Whichever one starts getting hit the most is usually where I deploy my other rods.

Very helpful information. I usually get a slot red or two when I go but so far the bull reds have evaded me.

The other thing about using all varieties of bait is to move to another spot a mile or more down the beach.

Btw, is anyone using crabs for bait - live or otherwise ?

Donnie- 1/2 a legal crab is excellent black drum bait.
