Mary and I got to sbh this morning right at sunrise. Big Orange sun in the sky. I set up one rod with a double drop and shrimp and fish bites trying to catch some whiting for cut bait. Set it out and before I could set my second rod up the first one goes off. Two whiting. Set up my second rod with some cut Whiting put it out and then tried to catch some live finger mullet. No finger mullet to be found. Water was very Sandy and shin deep water cannot see your toes. Whiting were thick and after while I just switched out Rigs and didn't try for anymore. Was able to finally catch a half a dozen finger mullet and that was it all day. Put it on my pole and proceeded to catch a big skipjack. Cut it up put it on one rod, had a live mullet on another, and cut whiting on the 3rd. Wound up catching, as the title said , a smorgasbord of fish. I got one hard head, a croaker, an 18-inch redfish, two small drum, two pomp, three big skipjack, three gafftop, numerous Whiting, six sharks, and one big supple bum Ray. The ray picked up my bait in the second gut and started stripping line heading to Cuba. Cranked down a little bit on my reel and finally was able to stop him and bring him back over the third bar back into the second gut and up on top of the first bar. At that point it hauled buns again and went all the way out to the third bar. This time is decided to hunker down and that was it. Could not budge it after a total fight of 30 minutes. Finally had to go all the way out and cut my line. I think it sat down on the bottom and thought okay I live in the ocean and I can stay here as long as I want what are you going to do about it. LOL well what I did was cut my line and let him stay. All the sharks were between 2 and 3 ft. All in all pretty fun day out on the beach

Sounds like a fun day fishing at the beach indeed. We were out there yesterday and had the same conditions, just minus the smorgasbord. |

Nice.
I took my boy out there this morning. 24-1/2" red on first cast, and just misc other small stuff.
I think we just missed the bite, as we got set up at 8:30am. |

Very nice, Tom. Looks like the beach trash has thinned out. Looking forward to getting out of Illinois and back home to the sand. _________________ "I do hunt and I do fish and I do not apologize to anyone that I hunt and fish." - Norman Schwarzkopf |

| I had a fun fight with a ray tuesday week ago like that, though I got him to the beach. Headed for cuba until i got him turned, and then he made a run north up the beach. I had to follow him, all the while hoping he was a shark or a red, but a couple of times he sucked down and I knew then. But he was a blast - interesting , he had no stinger in the tail. I asked this question somewhere recently - if you remove the stinger on the tail, does it harm the sting ray and second, would it grow back. |

Your smorgasbord had a repeat on Sunday. Numerous folks with many lines out all the length of beach from Bob Hall, all points south, to the sticks.
Saw little sharks, whiting, big gafftops, and an occasional red (plus one NICE surf trout ) landed as I meandered the sand.
The trash has abated some, and the surf looks to have greened up. All in all, a nice day for a cruise. (Although to the north, from Access Rd.2 to Fish Pass, the trash [especially reeds and plastic bottles] congregated and it's a mess up that way). |
