Went for my first 'salt water therapy' since the storm, went this evening to PINS, water was pretty decent, birds working up and down , fish hitting in the surf - turns out mostly skip jacks, only went a couple miles down, but the water looked very busy. A young couple stopped several hundred yard north of me , i thought they were fishing, built a nice little fire , then scooted out to the water. I swear I wasnt watching them, but as I looked down at my rig in a rod holder that was on the same side of me, as they were , I noticed they were probably he-in and she-in out in the water. iow, no clothes, they did not have fishing gear with them, etc. etc. etc.
I was probably grinning - and remembering being that age - they came out of the water, and when they got to their fire, they just grabbed stuff and started running for their car, jumped in the car and blasted out of there. I thought ' how careless to leave a fire burning ' but it was in the sand, not really in the dunes. But - not cool to leave a fire burning.
I start shutting down, reeling up, and getting the stuff out of the water and walking toward the car and about the time I got on dry land, the mosquitos covered me - i got to the car as quick as possible, threw everything in , forgot about putting on dry clothes - and jumped in. My car had been open and was also full of mosquitos - drove a bit and then stopped and killed enough of them that I could see to drive. Then I realized why that young couple (probably without clothes on) had grabbed their stuff and ran to their car and hauled out of there. Still should have put out the fire - but anyway.
If you are heading down, leave before dark, and/or take plenty of mosquito spray with you. Probably should keep your clothes on too, or not. |

Thanks Donnie! I have seen them like that before and there's no way to describe it unless you have been in them like that. _________________ Like Corpusfishing.com on Facebook! |

THAT'S RIGHT!
Prepare yourself if your heading to the beach. Woke up at 4 a.m. the first night there, got out of the tent cot and was immediately covered from head to toe.
Also, right on with the surf report. Lots of birds, bait and skipjacks. |

May go back today or tomorrow after work but will def leave before sunset, must be vampire mosquitos, dont think they were an issue until dark.
But I may just go sbh instead of pins, not to avoid mosquitoes but it seems like more fish catching (trout , reds) were happening in that direction rather than PINS. What are yall hearing ?

| I went back this evening - went sbh, that sucked, the water was nasty, caught two hardheads. So I said enough, pulled up and went to pins, about a mile down, water looked much better so put one rod out with fish bites and did cocahoe yellow / pink - with the other. Caught another hard head. I was pulling up to leave , when my fishbites reel took off, this was a penn 5500 spinning rig with 30 lb spider wire. I expected whiting, but this ran straight out - pulling drag all the way, then it turned and headed north, pulled me 150 yards down the beach. It was a sting ray that acted like a red, a great fight. Third one in 3 weeks, the 1st two fought like 55 gallon barrels - this one was a blast, worth the 25 minute drive out there. Tried to get help from a passing jeep suv looking thing - I am out there, almost dark, rod bent over , i have the gaff in my hand - i yelled - " can yall help, i am by myself ". They took off, i would bet out of state tags. Edited to add: Maybe I am scary looking. Thats probably it. |

Well Donnie, it was either the gaff or the "I am by myself" that ran them off. Only they know the reason.
Now, for seriousness. They should have stopped to help as any decent person would do..... _________________

The strange thing - is that - its a blast to watch and help someone land a fish - why would someone come down there if they arent like that. Except for this japanese family I met down around the 20 mile marker, driving a mini-van, and looking for "we want to pick up big shells - why cant we find any ?" , so maybe not everyone is like us. But they should be. |

| Back to the mosquito issue. I like many people have been getting bit a lot by mosquitos lately, not only while fishing, but while at work. And now it looks like I am paying the price for not wearing repellent. I started having body aches, headache and mild fever a few days ago, but no cold symptoms. Nothing severe, but annoying nonetheless. As of this morning, no symptoms, but folks, don't forget West Nile is still out there. |

Have used this for years for gnats and flies. If you can stand the smell. Take pine sol and wet a rag. Pat the rag all over your body.
I kinds chuckle thinking that the next time I come down there. A solid possibility of pine sol could be in the wind.
Solid fast the flies and the gnats hate it for what ever reason. Can't help but think that the mosquitoes would not as well. _________________ If you do not seek a solution you are in the wrong situation. |
