I guess maybe I should find some coloradofishing.com board but, well, i'm already registered here and maybe somebody can help. Going to Colorado for a week in August and I'm looking for a two piece set up. I'm thinking an ultralight 5 foot 6 setup with a spinner??? Suggestions? I'm not looking to go the fly route. Never done this sort of fishing before, but it looks like small spinner baits is what to throw. 4 to 6 pound test from what i have read. Would like to keep the rod and real under $200. Any input would be greatly appreciated! _________________

Just read your post and hope I do not step on Zia' s toes since he was in the subject line.
I hope I can help since you said ultralight I am guessing you are heading to high country as 9500 ft or higher.
If you are planning on fishing small steams 1 to 6 foot across and beaver ponds. You will be catching brook trout. Anything over 8 inches long is a good one. You will catch many 5 to 6 inches long because they overpopulate. These are wild trout not hatchery fish. They are very easily spooked. They live in little pockets of calm water or undercut banks. If they see you or your shadow no bites to be had. You will dabble or flip your lure or bait. For that reason I like an ultralight at least 7". I can stay low but still control where my lure goes. I like Panther Martin spinners with a yellow body that has red spots and silver blade. In August grasshoppers on a small hook with one split shot BB size. If you are at a lake when evening comes a fly behind a topedo float can be fun.
Good to harvest some of those small brook trout and enjoy. |

4 lb test is perfect for the small fish. That's what I used fishing stream and rivers and lakes in California. You get a good cast with small lures. I have a 4 foot rod with a small reel fits anywhere. I'd rather have a 2 piece. However a cheap fly rod set up with some floating line is a lot of fun and not hard to learn to use. I'm done next.... _________________ I LIKE MINE FRIED. |

| I just checked Dicks website and you can buy a 7" ugly stick combo for $50.00. Just about the same prize as taking your bride to the movies with snacks. |

I pretty much just use a cheapy rod with a decent small spinning reel. Most of the fish I've been catching have been in the 10-14 inch range with a few 19's thrown in. Whole setup is under $50. For the summer fishing I like to use 10 lb braid which is like a 3lb diameter and use a 4 lb leader on it. Panther Martin's, rooster Tails, mepps Spinners is what I use most of the time. Easy to cast by flicking the wrist sidearm or underhand. I like brown, brown and black and white and have been pretty successful with those colors. In the winter I go with 6 lb mono because it holds water less than braid and less likely that your guides will freeze over. Good luck.
I usually start fishing the stream close to me first casting upstream and bringing the lure toward me,then gradually work my lure further into the stream. When casting across the stream I let my lure work its way down stream and often times as it starts rising to the surface you'll get a hit. |

| I have 2 set ups that I love using. 1 is an Ugly Stick SPL1100 5' Rod with a Shimano 2500FB reel. I have had this setup for several years. I use power pro 10lbtest/ 2lb dia. First fish I ever caught on it was on the N jetty at Port A, a 27" Spanish mackerel and I have been hooked ever since. I have caught reds up to 34" and a ton of white bass on it. My newest and second UL setup is a Shakespeare Micro Graphite MS50 2 ULD 5' with an ABU Garcia Silver Max 10 also with the Power Pro 10lb/ 2 lb dia. I love using both of these little guys. Last trip out at Lake bastrop I hooked and landed 3 catfish about 5lbs each and hooked several large carp, landing one that was 5lbs and 24" long.. The PP line lets you cast a mile and also lets you load the reel up. I'd rather use these than any of my other 11 set ups.. |

| I use spoons and spinners, but I always catch bigger and more trout on small crank baits like a floating Rapala in silver or gold |
