okay guys i need help deciding on what to get next for my boat.. im from san antonio and go to corpus or spi once a month.. still getting familiar with the water down there. i prefer wade fishing but catch my self just drifting on flats alot.. mainly cause i dont know any spots to wade.. i have 218 dlv carolina skiff
it floats supper skinny but cant run skinny.. hoping a jackplate can give me better shallow water performance but a trolling motor can really get me into some places.. last the power pole ive had a bad experience once my wife took a nap on the boat and i got out of the boat to wade on the islands north of the jfk anchored and i beached the boat..(or thought i did) 15 minutes later noticed my boat across the icw and my wife crashed out on the boat and could not hear me thank god the boat stopped on the spoils.. she finally woke up but couldnt push the boat off the sand bar so i had to swim across the icw.. one reason im scared of wading is to loose my boat.. what anchors do you guys use i have a stake out pole but really only works when the bottom is muddy and i really dont like to wade in muddy bottoms.. |

You are in a learning curve we all go through, so it will get better sooner than later. I use a C-claw, because it does not require a chain to hold. Due to the tide, wind etc. you cannot count on a Power Pole to hold the boat while you are out of it, as you now know, unless it is stuck in deep mud, like your stake out stick. BTW, I love my Power Pole, but not for any kind of permanent anchoring, and especially if you are going to get out of the boat with a sleeping wife aboard! Better luck next time. |

All three of those things are great if you can afford them! I use them all every trip. The jackplate may cause you to have water pressure issues if you run high (I'm not familiar with the dlv skiff hull). I run a big tunnel hull so I don't have issues, but I used to have problems getting pressure with my old V-hull. As for wading, powerpole and chained danforth anchor are what I use. I also try to keep the boat upwind so it will come to me if it gets loose. I used to use a hand operate motorguide, but I love my minnkota copilot now. Can operate it from the back while others fish off the bow _________________ JJ |
