Long time reader/lurker here. Originally from Corpus, but now I only get back a few times a year.
My wife and I are going to be down in September for about a week, and I had planned to do some fishing at the Packery jetties. My question is in regard to recommendations for a rod and reel setup for fishing the jetties. The more specific, the better.
As a teenager, I went out to Port A a few times and attempted to fish those woefully unprepared. So that's why I'm trying to get some ideas before heading down.
Thanks in advance. |

Depends on what you want to catch.
If you want to catch trout and slot reds then a baitcaster 6'-7' med action or med light with braid (30lb) or mono (10-12lb) with a short 20lb leader will do the trick. Can even use some of your bass lures for fishing tight to the rocks to catch a few trout or reds. You can get away with using a med heavy as well if that's all you have. Med Heavy works well with throwing weigted popping corks and live bait or cut mullet etc. Reels for trout and reds can be any small palm sized bait caster with 85-120 yards of line.
Goes up from there. I'll let the big game guys talk about bigger outfits. |

If you ever want to get revenge for your past at the PA south jetty, I've found satisfaction freelinig live shrimp on the channel side for mangrove snapper. Nothing quite like a fried mangrove snapper fillet sandwich. |
