Headed down in a couple of weeks and will be out of my element having never fished south of Mansfield. No boat, so I'm counting on wade in spots and, hopefully, to plug the surf for some trout if the weather cooperates. My questions though is if I should have the same expectations of the surf and jetties being this far south? It seems the last few years surf trout have been harder and harder to catch anywhere south of Matagorda. Should I just reserve myself to things like Spanish and jacks and bring the appropriate gear? I know it's a different ecosystem. Any other advice is much appreciated, including on where to take my small boys (5 & 4) just to get their line stretched in the day.

Fishing can be great down there. That's why so many folks drive 62 miles down the beach to get there.

Thanks Tyler. Anyone familiar with the area to take little ones fishing?

Depends on the size/age of the kids.

Just past the convention center (big yellow building) on the bay side, is park area. It is known for kite surfing/flying. Very shallow for a long way out. Should be able to see mullet, pinfish, hermit crabs, and blue crabs as you walk on the hard sandy bottom.

On the gulf side, you can access at at several points (Beach access 4, 5, 6). It is usually pretty easy to throw fishbites and/or shrimp and catch whiting. Lots of fun for kids. You can catch fish pretty much any time of day.

Be sure and have an umbrella and plenty of sun screen to keep the sun off of the kids so the trip does not become painful.

Thanks the tips. I'll be taking my older boy with a guide one morning, but will need to entertain the younger with pin fish or dink trout.

Is the convention center area you mentioned an area for an early morning wade or too shallow and overrun by the wind sailers?

My brother tells me many people he knows talk about wading behind the convention center. Early morning is best before the other activity heats up.

Early morning at the Isla Blanca jetty, right by the beach can be good for Jack Cravelle with Pony mullet. Be sure you have a clicker or drag set light or those beasts will pull your pole in the water. They don't seem to go for the smaller mullet there in my past experience.

Oh, another thing. Mangrove snapper can be caught around the jetty, also. Watch the other people there. Usually, in the summer, you can toss shrimp on the channel side and catch them.

I will be down there this Saturday for a week. I will hit the surf and the jetty. Maybe hit the Brownsville ship channel a time or two.

Good luck!

Jeff Wolda had an informative column in the current issue of The Saltwater Angler about driving on PINS. It might behoove you to read that before heading down the beach.

Did anyone else read the column? I was enjoying it until I reached the part where he mentioned the two trucks that sped through a camp and ran over and killed their two dogs. I've never been so incensed about anything in my life. that broke my heart and brought tears to my eyes.

Awesum, FYI, he is asking for input for South Padre Island, not PINS. Smile

Thanks for all the info, Ratherbefishing. I'll be down Sunday for the week after fishing upper laguna and Baffin Friday and Saturday. I'll be boatless at SPI, but will let you know if I stumble on some fish.

If there is a little weed in the water you want to be fishing north of the mansfield jetties.

Best of luck!
