"thank you for letting me come down from RHODE ISLAND to talk about red snapper fishing in the gulf of mexico".
hit the road MFr.. Mr. Brown can suck a tailpipe. He's trying to suggest the same system of catch sharers for recreational fisherman and accusing them of going over their limit. HE'S A COMMERCIAL FISH BUYER!!!!!!
recreational fishermen don't crash a fishery. Professionals counting their catch in tons do.
the biggest joke of all is saying that fish caught 4 miles off the beach are the same as fish caught 50 miles offshore.

Fortunately we can catch snapper in State waters year round.

the bottom line is NOAA (or even the states) do not have any idea how many snapper are actually on the gulf.
I have over 1000 waypoints offshore, and I would bet my house I could catch red snapper at 900 of them. |

When trolling over any structure at all I don't dare bump it into neutral to let the ribbon fish sink. If I do I haul up the mythical red snapper of yore. _________________ Live like you're dying |

I was fishing a wreck last monday and a few ling swam up underneath my boat. I dropped down a live mullet right below the boat, and a snapper came up and grabbed it before the ling could.
the red snapper are out of control. but I guess it's a good business model when you're trading, buying and selling catch shares that were given to you by the king. |

| what was disappointing about that video was not only the guys who had the big commercial interest, but the drum they kept beating saying that snapper die anyway when you catch them. That's not my experience when the fish are properly vented. |

In the words of Lee Corso, "Not So Fast My Friend".
Just cause you can't see it doesn't mean it ain't happening. Barotrauma effects can be immediate (eyes bulging, stomach protruded - and for all the Yahoo's that poke the stomach as it is sticking out of the fishes mouth, you ain't doing nothing!!!), or more importantly delayed. One of the biggest causes of catch-and-release mortality is increased predation via stinking dolphins and barracuda (plus an occasional amberjack if you are out far enough). Throw on top of that the thermocline effects, especially in the summer when mortality has been proven to be the highest - which.... oh by the way coincides with our micro-season - and you have the perfect mix for the estimate of upwards of 80% dying due to being thrown back.
Is it like that everywhere and in all seasons, hardly. 20% is more likely, especially in State waters, 25-45% in deeper areas, with the number steadily rising with water temperature. And venting was found to be less-than-effective on this species, which is why the 'Venting Tool Requirement' Rule was rescinded some time ago. |

where I've been fishing, I don't see many fish coming up with inflated bladders.
it's probably because I only catch big fish and they actually fight and come up slowly I do see it more with a smaller fish since you can yank them right up. BUT... I'm not sitting on the reefs either to watch the fish after they're released.
in that terrible time in my life I lived in east texas, the lakes have winter crappie seasons where you are supposed to keep the first 10-15 that you catch. no throwbacks due to the mortality in the winter time fishing. maybe that's something to look at with THE red snapper if the problem is really that bad.
I did a party boat trip years ago, and the dolphins were horrible. knock on wood but they never seem to come around my boat and bother me. sharks have been a bit of a problem, but once they start eating THE red snappers on the way up, I'll move somewhere else. |

At least offshore predation is a big factor. I have seen while doing my safety stops when diving the rigs 100% of returned snapper turn into clouds of pink water and scales by barracuda. It's like they line up and take their shot in turn. It only lasts a few seconds, but it is complete. _________________ Live like you're dying |
