It's been a busy week since I've gotten back from Baffin, but I promised I'd put some pigs up of my trip... errr, no that's not a typo Wink I'm not showing all the pics I took of all the fish. Mostly had good days, a couple awesome days hunting big trout, and a couple that were just tough grinds with 30 mph winds. Almost everyday was windy to some extent. In some areas they'd only feed after the wind got up.

Most of the trout were either caught on shallow mud and grass or in sand and grass in different areas. There's also been (still) some decent box fish holding along the south shoreline rocks.. mostly resident fish. There are times when those rocks don't hold anything but so far this spring there's been some good catches of box fish there.

The reds were mostly caught in the Laguna sight casting, with a couple nice trout (some 17-22inch fish) mixed in that area on blind cast (fishing) pot holes and edges of the grass in the Yarborough area.

The better trout all came on Mirrolure Paul Browns, either Devil (when there was a weaker bite like the cold front passage or after a cold front) or the Fat Boy (when there was lower barometer, more bait activity, and higher tide). The fish I caught on the Devil were either with the black with the chartreuse tail or the TxChicken. The Biggest trout came from floating fat boys in both Tx Chicken or Pearl Black Back. Im tuning the fat boys bending the nose down about a 1/4 inch and the tail down a 1/8th inch to get them to walk the dawg and Im walking them in 12 to 20 inches of water in mud and sparse grass. The walk would be akin to a slow-ish to moderate walk (same rod action as a spook) with a pause here or there. The fat boy floater is really a great 'corky' to start with since you can learn to tune it, and walk it, and it rarely runs deep enough to get into the standing sea grass in this scenario. If there's a bunch of floating grass though it's not the best choice there. Heck you could use the floater all summer for a top water to get your confidence up with these lures... I had some awesome blowups on it and one 26 just barely 'kissed' it under the surface, one 25 thumped it while it was under the water. The great thing is you can usually see them take it and also feel the hit. I had a 22 inch trout absolutely annihilate it in a toilet bowl like 'suck down'. That one I didn't have to feel, I could even hear it from 30 yards away, and so did my wading partner.

In the middle of the day after the wind got up and the sun got higher in the sky I hit the flats around the Yarborough area and sight-casted for reds. I also hit some sand pockets where the current was dumping off the flats into those sand pockets and caught trout mostly on Little Johns in Golden Bream and Watermelon Copper with 1/6thoz jig heads. This is also what one buddy used to catch a 27in trout the last day of trip. He puts a little rattle in it as well... he says he never takes that little john off that rod.. that's confidence. I don't blame him. He caught that 27 on a high sky, high barometer day that we were grinding some grass edges in Baffin Proper.

Buddy of mine fished with me, Matt Mooney, Congrats Buddy! 27inch on High Sky, High Pressure - Little John.

Iit's crazy where I caught this fish.. but I can't say publicly. First she hit on a spook junior, twice, ... so I quickly switched to the Floating TxChicken FatBoy. Felt her hit, just a thump. Solid 25.

Speaking of topwaters, while I had a few topwater strikes, the take was just way better on subsurface lures even if they were right at the top like the 'floaters' which are right at or under, the top and not a true topwater. I threw a few one knockers and some jrs. Should happen soon though, water has been right at 69-75.

Caught this one on a BrokenBack in Tx Chicken. Worked similar to fatboy (tune is a little different). The BrokenBack is a larger bite and it's actually a FatBoy in the front with the tail of the original. You have to tweak these a little with a 64th nail weight in the chin area or lead solder wrapped around the front hook so it doesn't float. She was 24 in.

Caught these 2 fish during a cold front passage. Was blowing 30 out of the N and not fun fishing conditions. Fish were there and feeding. This one was just shy of 25.

This was the second trout (26) that day during the frontal passage. None of these were personal best for me.... just good solid fish.

This was the biggest trout of the trip. Right at 28 on the nose. 7 3/4 lbs with a big digested mullet in her belly. Pearl / black back floating Fat Boy.

Just a note.. you can make most any of the Fat Boys work a lot like a floater by putting lighter wire hooks compared to the stock hooks. It will work just barely deeper. Replace the stock hooks with #4 bronze Gammy's and it'll work pretty high but not quite on top. You could also weight them or use heavier or bigger hooks.

Back to the reds. The reds were on mud and grass but just up from the pot holes and also where the current dumped off the flats. Caught 5-6 a day and it was a blast. Most averaged between 24-27 with a couple upper slots mixed in around 28. Lots of various forage in the grass was showing up from mullet to grass shrimp with a couple trout slicks here or there. I caught most of the reds on a weedless soft plastic.

All fish were released. I have more in the freezer than I can already eat and I'm a proponent of catch and release anyway. Sure I keep a few when I want some fresh fillets.

Hope this helps, maybe at least this gives you guys some ideas; feel free to PM me with questions or email me.

Thanks for the detailed report and pics. Looks like you guys had fun. I usually stick to plastics and topwaters but I need to start throwing my corkys.
