I'd really like to learn more about Cobia focused fishing tactics.

Besides casting at channel markers or nearest rigs, are there strategies to target Cobia in the waters just offshore of the beach out to the first Rigs?

Are there any guides that focus on Cobia?

the main way I've had success is just bumping from structure to structure, chumming some and seeing if they come up, or splash the water with your rod and see if they'll come up to the boat. have a live bait ready and sight cast to them. When the weather is good enough to get a bay boat offshore, I usually go make as many trips as possible to look for them.

I'll give you all a little tidbit too; if you have a raw water wash down, you can spray the water and sometimes that will get them curious enough to cruise by as well...

They take Cobia fishing SERIOUSLY down on the Emerald Coast, with the LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG Cobia tournament going on now. Lots of GREAT info here:

Most of the Cobia down there are caught sighting fishing, not far off the beach, and from what I have learned, if you don't have at least one rod rigged with a big jig to cast QUICKLY[i] to a sighted fish, you sir might just be a Cobia fishing schmuck!!! Shocked

Yes the water down there is (usually) MUCH clearer than the coastal bend, so the fish are easier to spot, but a Cobia is a Cobia.

If you have one on, and it's hooked solidly, leave him on. His buddies will normally come in close to check it out and you can usually chum or sight cast to a few more. But they learn quickly, so try and chum up the biggest and baddest one with a smaller one on the hook. That method has worked more than once for me.

I follow turtles. Throwing a jig around the biggest ones usually results in a bite. Wink

When I was a kid my grandfather would lay newspaper flat on the water surface then come back to it after a visiting a rig or two.The fish would be under just about every piece.

Of course, that was back in the day where hundreds of rigs within sight of the beach so the population was probably higher.

Nowadays I just fish sargassum mats or floating trash.

Don't know if the population is higher or lower than when there were more rigs close in, but the fish have been migrating for eons before we came along. My only point is that they are there.

I've heard of using the newspaper thingy for Mahi too. Even thought about taking a sheet of 1/8" plywood and cutting it crosswise into 8 strips, 1' x 4'. Drill some holes in the edges and connect the panels with black zip ties, so that it would fold like a map. Thompson's Water Seal, varnish or paint would make it last longer, but also weight a little more. In the end you'd have a 1' x 4' x 1" thick bundle, easy to carry and easy and on storage space. Two connected together would be a pretty sizable hidy hole for fish! Twisted Evil
