Classic quote from 'Trains, Planes, and Automobiles', and it's what I thought of when I made a trip out to the beach yesterday to see what 30+ mph west winds does to the surf.
It not only beat the surf into submission, if you look closely, you see the 'back-side' of the whitecaps as they move offshore!!! 
It was quite the sight to see. |

Yes, and why an offshore wind is so important for great surfing conditions! Only problem being, 98% of the waves (ahem, cough) that come into the coastal bend are generated by the normal seabreeze, instead of the big, stable swells that come from BIG storms 100's, or better yet 1,000's of miles away.
Getting such a swell down there is rare enough. Having it coincide with ANY offshore wind...... worse odds than a loaded roulette wheel!!!
