Went to the surf today looking to catch some bull Reds. Water conditions were fantastic and plenty of mullet in the water. Tides were extremely low when I first got to the beach. I set up my rods on the first bar and cast into the third gut, as well as the second.

However no bulls showed up. Caught a 25" red and a 3' blacktip. Both on live mullet. Didn't fish with anything else. Check with several different fisherman on my way home and nobody was having success

Hard to complain too hard about a 25inch red though. I've had worse days.

I agree, Zia's off day would be a highlight day for me.

That water looks amazing.
I've always heard that the reds like a rougher surf, helps stir up the bottom. I don't know if this is true or not, but it was pretty nasty a week or two ago when I got into the bulls. We where using cut whiting and cut mullet. Live mullet wasn't producing for us.

Finally got there on a yesterday, as in "you shoulda been here yesterday". Monday, me and another retired firefighter had a stellar day, 28 reds, 26 of them oversized. 1 30" (tagged) and 25 of them between 35" and 41". Everything was screaming, my elbows, my back, my drag, etc. And throw in 5 blacktips approx. 3' to 3-1/2'. Far and away my best trip ever. Next 1/2 day, many more boats but still managed 8 oversized reds and 6 smacks. The fishing Gods were definitely smiling on us for this trip. Would have liked a few more slots to fill up some empty freezer space, but beggars can't be choosers, and I will always cherish this trip.

That's awesome! My muscles ache just reading about it. You said next day many more boats. I'm assuming then that you didn't fish from the sand.

No Sir, we were sitting in a boat at the end of that damn rock pile, that beckons me back no matter how hard I try to do something else.

Hope this shows up ok for y'all, MS office defaults to sway and I'm no computer whiz, so I just had to go with it. Just a few pics of some of the fish we caught this week, I guess we hit it just right between fronts, looks like this next one will pack a bit of a punch, maybe first freeze here in the hills. Tight lines guys and gals!

Zia, this next front should be the one that finally gets everything going. Most of the reds are still stacked up on all the jetties right now. We've caught plenty on charters to keep people happy but, nothing like we should be right now. Everything is late this year with the warm temps. We're still waiting for the jacks to show up in force. On a charter Wednesday we slayed the smacks and trout but did not catch a single red fish. Crazy for mid November! Also caught something else but I have to keep it hush hush until it's on the cover of Saltwater Angler next week. Jeff Wolda
