Driving along Ocean Drive this afternoon it sure looked rusty red colored in certain areas along Cole Park and especially by Poenisch Park. I didn't notice any aerosols or dead fish but it sure looked suspicious. _________________ Like Corpusfishing.com on Facebook! |

I saw it as well! I saw a few reports on Facebook of shad acting crazy and I remember seeing the same thing last year before the outbreak _________________ -Fred- |

| My wife and I also noticed the shad swimming erratic at Packery Park with many of them already dead. I remember this being the first fish which died last year when the Red Tide came. We were wondering if anyone else noticed. It did not stop us from getting a limit of reds, but it doesn't seem like good news. |

Getting samples as I type. Hopefully it's run-off, but I have a sneaking suspicion it might not be.
Fingers crossed...... |

Initial screening says Pyrodinium bahamense, also a dinoflagellate known to cause red colored water. Already been positive ID from offshore earlier this year. Does have a toxin, but not normally associated with fish kills. More so on the Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning side. Can kill fish due to low DO at high bloom concentrations
This picture is from today at Roberts and Ocean. It's definitely a distinct line, and the birds are there for a reason (all of the white dots are birds on the surface).......

As Lee Corso would say, "Not so fast my Friend".....
After further review
Brevis is the topic of the day. Strap your boots on and tie them laces tight, it looks to be a rough ride....... |

This just off the press:
Corpus Christi Bay: Water samples taken on October 10 by TPWD confirmed [The Organism Who Shall not be Named _ I added that part ] (K. brevis) in Corpus Christi Bay. High concentrations of [said organism] cells were found at Cole Park, Swanter Park and off Robert Drive. Low concentrations were confirmed off Oso Pier. Mild respiratory irritation has been reported at Swanter Park and off Robert Drive.
Along the Gulf of Mexico in Padre Island National Seashore (PINS): Water samples taken last week by PINS staff indicate low levels near the Visitors Center. For specific information about conditions, please contact the Padre Island National Seashore directly. |
