It only took me twenty years, but I finally landed a big one (at least for a kayak catch). After messing with the kingfish for half the morning I set out to find a nice cobia for dinner. I jigged up a nice live bait and sent it back down with a few strategically placed hooks. It paid off with a 55 inch beast, and she pulled me around for over an hour before I could sink a gaff in her. I have learned that cobes are a dangerous fish to handle in a kayak, so the most effective way to deal with them is after they "go to sleep". I employ a heavy bat for this, but after such a large fish resisted my anesthetic efforts, I may have to move to something more suitable for larger fish... still figuring that one out. It's a pretty cool landing scene by my standards.

Awesome! You need to be careful with those big girls. Sometimes they'll 'wake up' after a short nap. LOL! _________________ Cudakilla.com

Congrats. That is a big ling, especially from a kayak! My best ling weighed 42 lbs but did not measure it. We had limited out on snapper and I was throwing some left over chum over board when I noticed a big ling in the chum line. I put a good bait on an un-weighted circle hook and casted it to him. He sucked it up and the fight was on. _________________ Off Shore Port Mansfield |

Even 20 lb mono and 8 lbs of drag can give you a great sleigh ride when the fish is willing. With my 40 lb braid and a strong drag system, I have felt like I was getting up on plane a few times, but in reality big sharks are the only fish that will carry you a mile or more on a real ride. The cobia and kings tend to fight in circles, but they will definitely move the kayak around. Cobia do have a bad habit of running into the rig structure to break us off, so we tend to drag them away from structure before really letting them know they're hooked. That's what I was doing on the video. |
