hey guys, I haven't posted on here in awhile but I had a few questions about fly fishing and you all have been great about helping me out. A buddy and I decided to start fly fishing, but we are having difficulty figuring out what kind of places to fish. We've been to PINS to fish the surf and a few drive in spots and we are still yet to catch anything worth talking about. Not looking to limit out just get that first feeling of catching a red on a fly rod we keep hearing about. Any tips on areas to give us a chance would be fantastic we do have a boat. Any tips about sight casting would be great also. Thanks guys and gals in advance. _________________ I'm here to chew bubble gum and fish...and I'm all out of bubble gum. |

I've always had a lot of fun, and success, all along the back side of Mustang Island heading towards port a. Water shallow enough to sight cast, as well as slightly deeper water and there's a lot of areas to fish.
Also, anything and everything you want to know about flyfishing can be found out by talking to Don at Roy's. He's the fly-fishing guru in this area |

Thanks ziacatcher. I actually spoke to those guys the other day when I was buying my 2nd rod for a New Mexico fly fishing trip at the end of this month. I think I could have sat down with those guys for days they are so knowledgeable. Any idea if yarbarough flats is any good? Also do you usually fish places that's covered from the wind or just shorelines. Example: Wilton's cut vs Estes flats _________________ I'm here to chew bubble gum and fish...and I'm all out of bubble gum. |

| Yes, Yarbrough flats can be really good and is one of the best places to consistently catch black drum in good numbers on the fly via sight casting. Take either small black flies (Clouser's or Crazy Charlies) or spoon flies but don't strip them for drum. Sight cast then let the fly settle with, at most, a little twitch. Reds there as well. Also, check out the fly fishing board here - some really talented folks post great information there regarding fly fishing the ULM. |

It's gonna depend on the run off, but it's 5 day backpacking trip. Hopefully in either the Pecos or Gila wilderness. The fly shops informed me that if the run off is in full swing they suggest we go somewhere else though. Its our first fly fishing trip out of state. _________________ I'm here to chew bubble gum and fish...and I'm all out of bubble gum. |

| You guys are making me want a new rod. I have not entered into the saltwater side of the fly yet. If you have ever read A River Runs Through It, you might recognize my screen name. NM is a very interesting place, Chama, and Winston are on my short list of places to hunt sometime. |

Fishing the San Juan is fantastic. last year I caught a nice 6-pound rainbow just below the dam.
If you look closely at the black spot on the penny that is the nymph that I used to catch it
Water flow is pretty consistent below the dam with controlled runoff. When the spring runoff is too high and the water's churned up the San Juan is usually very fishable. Most of the time I fish 14 miles from my home, in the Rio Grande just south of Taos. One afternoon this fall I wound up catching over 20 fish out of the same little hole. That's the best I've ever done in a Rio Grande |

it would take me using tweezers, a microscope and many tries to get it tied on... not to mention breaking the small tippet needed to thread it on... _________________ the creepy uncle that scares the kids.... |

X2 on Don at Roy's Bait & Tackle... They have everything you need for fly fishing down here.
Take advantage of early mornings when the winds are the calmest. I've learned over the last year that you can fly fish anywhere really if you change your approach (use intermediate lines for deeper water, look up shorelines adjacent to flats on a map that will be protected from the wind, ect). _________________ "I never had an Easter, but I've always had a bunch of speakers" - Beardo |

ditto on the mustang island locations. find a big flat and time it so there's some water on it. then quietly go hunting. you might only make a handful of casts, but you'll see every fish and the stalk is most of the fun.
fishpass jetty is a favorite of mine for tops on fly tackle. you never know what species will get angry at something bright and shiny. _________________ 1.2.3,4,5. once i caught a fish alive.
