I wanted to use my time I had for spring break to get out to the beach to fish, but I was worried about there being too many spring breakers. Luckily I went to the sticks and parked there and was able to go to the no vehicle beach and find some space to set up.
Had no cut bait because I only managed to cast net a sheepshead at packery. Later I was able to cast net some horse mullet by throwing max distance into the channel.
One day I went the tide was very high and the bars and guts were hard to discern. But the whiting are always there to take your fish bites. Threw out cut whiting with no bites other than more whiting. Threw fish bites close in (just past the first bar) and ended up getting a nice bite from a small black drum. Hard heads moved into the area when the sun got lower and I started catching them along with small whiting.
Surf fishing was decent with the one black drum but the coolest thing about fishing on a beach with no cars is that the wildlife is able to thrive. By the sticks there are tons of ghost crabs, blue crabs, and speckled crabs. Cool to see the blue and speckled crabs sneak up to the coquinas to feed on them. When you open up a whitings stomach you also see that they eat the coquinas too. Then I'm sure the crabs attract the drum species to the beach like the black drum. A nice little food chain going on.
Later in the week I went back to do some shark fishing in the evening from the beach. Threw out some large whiting on big hooks. Got two nice runs. The bigger one bit through my wire leader. (need to upgrade my wire) And I also saw a shark cruising the beach with his find out of the water about 300yards out. Im not scared of shark but a bit spooky to see a 7ft shark when you're in there element and only have a kayak between you. Ended up only catching a small 3-4fter.
Also very excited that the trout topwater bite it started to heat up in the bays. |

Nice report, glad you caught a few.
What's even spookier about that location is you can see more than a 7ft shark. You can catch a glimpse of a 6 ft old fat guy sunbathing au naturale in the summer!!! That's where the nude beach moved to a number of years ago! |

Nice video! The crabs checking out the camera was pretty cool. _________________ Great captains, the stuff of legend, are made not by what they have caught, but by what they have given back. |

Good post and video. Very informative.
I like this about your report and the reports we see by CS, Becky, and Luke (when he lived in Corpus).
Keep your style of reports coming... _________________
