| This year I would really like to get into hunting, I don't own or know much about rifles. What rifles would you all recommend (brand, action, caliber) for hunting deer and hogs? My budget is limited at the moment so looking at something not to expensive that will still get the job done. |

Look at the Savage combos. Normally they are good buys and Savage is one of the most accurate out of the box.
30.06 is probably the most universal caliber and has the most bullet sizes available allowing you to hunt pretty much anything in North America. It's the old standby and pretty much the standard other calibers are compared to. If I could only own one rifle it would probably be a 30.06.
308 or 270 would be next as all around hunting guns. 308 probably the best all around accuracy and ballistics as a caliber. 270 is also a great caliber and a lot of people really like it.
If you're just going to use it to shoot Texas deer, a few hogs and nothing much else, you might consider a 243. Nice gun, low kick, good accuracy, and plenty for most Texas game other that the big exotics. _________________ Now that food has replaced my sex life I can't even get into my own pants!!!!!!!!

| Thanks Guys!!! That really helps I really appreciate the info. I did look at the savage combos and noticed they were all the same price, the caliber didn't make a difference on pricing so with that said I'm leaning toward the 308 or 30 06. I also like the mossberg patriot combos, any opinions on those? |

| I bought a converted army rifle (30-06) from an ROTC teacher I worked with in the '70's. He reglassed the barrel and added a scope. Bought it for $35. Killed everything from hogs to bear with it. Still have it. |

Yep. Lot of people today don't know that 30.06 was our WWII caliber. Made the M1 famous. A good condition M1 Garand today can run several thousand dollars from CMP. _________________ Now that food has replaced my sex life I can't even get into my own pants!!!!!!!!

| I was doing some research on the 30-06 last night and read about it being used in WWII. I did not know that, and I thought it was very interesting. It's been around for a long time. I think it's a done deal I will be purchasing the 30-06. I really appreciate the input, thanks again fellas. |

I was going to say 30-06 too since the old standby 30-30 is just as expensive or more now.
I doubt my ol reliable $75 bought new (on sale!) 30-30 will ever leave my family. |

243 for south Texas, a 264 for the rest of Texas, 30.06 will kill anything on the North American Continent, 270 easier on the shoulder. _________________ I LIKE MINE FRIED. |

| If you're going to hunt deer and hogs, personally I would utilize the .243 as many have already mentioned. Most of the 30-06 I have used in my lifetime would kick the snot out of you. This makes you start to wince every time you shoot and effects your accuracy. Shooting a smaller caliber will allow you to relax and make a good shot. A well placed shot by any caliber can be deadly. |

savage has good rep as an accurate decent priced rifle...
I'll vote for 308 in that is a little less recoil...
7-08 is flatter shooting and If the 260rem had taken off, maybe the best of all for deer blind shooting, w/ good ballisticts, sectional density and low recoil...WDM Bell killed hundred of elephants with cartridges similar to the last two mentioned... _________________ the creepy uncle that scares the kids.... |

You cam kill anything in Nodth A,Eric with a .30-06.
Savage model 10 with an accu trigger and a decent 3-9 scope and you're in business. _________________ Slow and steady wins the race...unless of course, it's an actual race. |
