Finally got a little time to make a post about this years tuna trip. There were 15 of us able to go, some old friends and some new ones! We found we had hit a good weather window as we left Port A .
The trip out was long but gave us a lot time for BS'ing with new and old friends, eating, and some sleeping.
Finally made it to our destination, the Gunnison rig, I believe it was around a 190 mile trip.
Once there we found a pod of Pilot whales had taken over the area! My first time seeing a whale of any type in the wild! Unfortunately they apparently spook the tuna or eat the same thing. They were cool critters to see though, I wish I had been able to get a picture.
We were only there for 20-30 minutes with no action before the captain made the decision to move. He choose to take us to the drill ship Discover India!
Once dark its a beautiful sight out there in the middle of nowhere!
Apparently the fish like it too! It didn't take long to get the decks bloody!!!
I wish I had the words or pictures to describe that night! It was just an incredible night of fishing! When it got light that morning I believe we had 37 yellowfin in the cooler! Nobody really fished much for the blackfin but we could have filled the boat if we wanted to. The cool thing is the majority of them were caught on topwaters! Just an incredible night of fishing!!!
I caught my limit fairly early into the night with a 111, 94, and a 74!
We had 6 first timer "greenhorns" on this trip, so they were given some appropriate headware! Horns were down until they caught their first tuna.
Then they were turned up when they were successful!
This was a common sight that night!
The next morning we made a slow troll over to the Nansen rig. Trolling was slow on this trip but we did catch one wahoo.
Once there we spent some time drifting catching cuda and a few rainbow runners
Chuck got one yellowfin on a chunk of blackfin during the day. That's is the Nansen floater in the background.
We had one surprise catch. A bigeye tuna made an appearance early in the evening.
That night the weather turned a little worse and the fishing wasn't quite so good. Took a bit of effort but we were able to catch what we needed and headed home with a limit of 45 yellowfin in the coolers!
We hit the dock and got the "hero" pictures taken. I marked out the name since its a competitor to a site sponsor.
Everybody's biggest. Big fish was 134 with quite a few in the hundred range.
Hauling them to the cleaning guys.
I ended up with 378 pounds to take to the cleaners!
Lots of good eating coming soon!
I ended up with an honest 175 pounds of boneless meat! My and the wife spent the next day cutting and sealing it and here is the result minus about 25 pounds we had already eaten or given away! Most of it is in steaks but some is destined to be canned. We have never done it but supposed to be very very good!
So that's it and this years trip is done! I can't wait to get out there again but this trip is going to be hard to beat! Had great weather, great crew and boat, and a fantastic bunch of guys to share it with! |

Thanks for all the kind words! It was definitely a trip to remember. I've always loved the offshore stuff but these tuna trips are just unreal! Watching a hundred pound fish explode on a topwater is just hard to describe! I can't wait to get out there again!!! |
