last week while trimming around the farmhouse I spooked a nearly fully feathered squab from the nest... put it back..
if they nest again, it should be a bumper crop...
w/the rain and weeds, not to mention the urban whitewings, we should have a great year...
quail are calling here, too.
someday I want to bucket-list the 4 Tx quail species..

I have a guide we use in Marfa for blue quail. We hunted in Feb of this year and got 130+ out of 240 (limit for 2 days) (1 group broke down first day of hunt).

I have some pretty good locations in Big Lake for blues. I'm just trying to find some kind of lease arrangement (day or season) in the Hondo -Uvalde -and parts south area for bobs. K grew up down there and I figured he would know everybody.

Ive started fileting my doves and putting them on shiskabobs. Marinate in Italian dressing, sprinkle with emerils essense, and wrap bacon around the whole thing.

Find me any quail huntin yet??

Can't wait for dove season to get here.
Or quail season for that matter. Some coveys had two hatches this year with great survival rates. Heck, there is a covey of 9 that like to camp out right next to my shop door. That'll wake you up (especially having not killed my yearly rattle bug near my shop this year yet)

well it's looking better..
the two 100ac cut milo fields are holding mourning doves.. cows are getting tired of those fields but cow-flops have some grain in them that were missed by the combine, so doves are picking thru them.. the 30ac field next to there has lots of tea-weed ( croton/dove weed ) and some re-growth sunflowers that were shredded a month ago..
neighbors big tank has water...
funny how the town white-wings are starting to come on...
guessing the last crop of squabs have fledged..
so... should be hot barrels in 10 days or so...
we're gonna start on the white-wings Sept 4 this yr.
should be a few left acct a Tues opener...
my 1100 20ga is ready.. time to get my super-combo lic.
the old Belgian Auto-5 light 12 will be standing by...
and if needed, the 1100 12 short, skeet barrel... that gun is money on blue-wing teal

Doves are as thick as flies here in my area just outside of Clovis NM. There are 100's of dove sitting on the power wires at every corner it seems.

We've had excellent brood weather so I expect millions of dove to "head south" to Texas as soon as the fornt big cold front rolls thru.
