|

Heading down tomorrow for a 2 week trip we've been planning all year and saw the dreaded Red Tide news. I understand what it is, but to what degree does it affect fishing? And does it affect bay waters? We mostly fish the surf at PINS but we do have a couple yacks to fish the bay.
Main question is, should we head to another beach toward Galveston or can we salvage the trip to Corpus?
Much appreciation for any help! |

If red tide gets bad enough, you will not be able to stand the surf for any worthwhile length of time in fishing. You will be in and out of your vehicle with a/c going.
Bays should be fine and with kayaks, you have all sorts of options for fishing.
If you are set on surf fishing, and with the reports coming in, and my experience with the junk, I would head to different beaches. It is a mystery and it goes sometimes as quickly as it comes but not usually.
Not trying to be a spoiler; just realistic. |

| Thank you Gib. I've always heard it's bad stuff but never experienced it myself. Appreciate the 'realistic' info. |

About 30 minutes ago I went to the Packery Bridge area and it was awful. That's where I took the pics. Next I went to the South Jetties and there were some fish on the surf, but I couldn't stand the throat irritation for more than 30 seconds. I drove to Bob Hall Pier and there were some fish, though not many. The irritation was less, but still there. From there I went home.

Yeah I would advise not surf fishing down here. I checked out the beach this evening and I was coughing before I hit the sand.
But if your dead set on corpus I've been hearing good reports on reds making their way to packery. We'll see if that changes. |

We arrived at Mustang Island State Park just after 6 pm with plans to camp on the beach. The waves were too rough to launch the kayak and the red tide was very irritating: cough, sinus drainage, and eventually eyes burning. I fished the south jetty till nearly dark and we drove back home. I got soaked by waves and my lips burned for a while. I won't go back till the red tide is gone. I was with my wife and 3-year old. If I had been with other men, we'd have probably camped and regretted it.
I caught a ladyfish in my cast net and a hardhead with the cut bait. It seemed like the fish had moved out, although I'm not the best judge since I'm a rather poor fisherman.
There were a few dead bait fish near the jetty. I bet that number will increase.
Next time I WILL slay some fish! |

| Thank y'all very much for the updates. Myself and I'm sure others greatly appreciate it. Looks like we're gonna head north to Quintana Beach for a few days (never been there b4) and hopefully the Red Tide moves out soon. Good luck to the ones that tough it out. |

I went outside to work on my boat in the slip of my canal front home and wham! My throat got irritated and my nose started running. Yes, it's creeping inland. _________________ HighTide

Something you island residents might want to look forward to, when and if that water exchange bridge is built on Park road 22 the red tide will be in everyone's backyard and on its way to the ULM through another access. To my knowledge/observation up until 4 - 5 years ago the red tide had never been in the ULM, I always understood mostly because of isolation and high salinity levels. Since Packery Channel was dredged the red tide has come into the ULM on a number of occasion.
I wonder if the bridge is going to be worth the sacrifice/losses?

High winds from cold fronts have dispersed the little guys and cleaned things up, but I have no idea how long this is going to last.
