I'm confused -- I thought that fly fishing for Redfish was mucho grande sport along the Texas coast?

Is that a myth? When I joined corpusfishing I figured for sure the fly fishing forum would be on fire.

Are there any committed Redfish fly fishermen on the forum or am I on my own? Very Happy

I've been thinking about adding a 7wt to my arsenal (because it seems like the right ticket for the fishies I've seen posted here on ccf.com) and Sage prices have gotten to be so absurd that I've started looking at other, more down to Earth brands, and the St. Croix Legend Elite Fly Rod is looking like it might be my choice. I have a Sage 4wt with a Bauer M1 on it and a Sage 9wt with a Bauer M5 on it. The 4wt will be fun for little specks but the 9wt seems like overkill for anything in the bays.

I have a Bauer CFX3 that would be perfect on a 7wt.

If anyone has any thoughts I'd like to hear them.

This time of year I'm not really focused on redfish... But I am thinking about adding a 7 wt. to my arsenal also for my upcoming Florida keys trip, and for winter fly fishing here. I'm looking at the TFO Axiom 7 wt. rod

I've looked at them (5.4 oz) - almost 1 oz heavier that the St. Croix (4.5 oz) and a little flashier! Wink

I also looked at the Lefty Kreh TiCr X Series 7wt (5 oz) and I am torn between that and the St. Croix...

At this time of year I am focused on air conditioning! Laughing

Ya know, I've been fishing for 66 years and ain't caught a fly yet. Don't fish for em much so maybe that's the reason. Usually I just smack em with a fly swatter. Mr. Green Mr. Green Mr. Green Mr. Green

Rodandroll, I love your sense of humor! Maybe if you used some duct tape you could catch a fly? Very Happy

I think that technology has advanced such that even bargain priced rods today are pretty darned good - especially compared to what was available in the not too distant past!

I have a few Sage fly rods and they certainly are nice but their prices reflect the "Brand" they've built more that the actually quality or cost of materials and labor. Ever heard of Whole Foods - same thing...

I would like a Sage rod but I am not about to pay $850 for any fly rod, ever.

TFO rods are great rods, especially their Lefty Kreh series - I just haven't decided yet but I am leaning toward the St. Croix.

I have a tfo pro special I picked up on sale for around $80 or so, I want to say they were on sale at cabellas again recently. I'd recommend it full price or not.

the TiCrx feels super sick, but haven't casted one.

The saltwater fly crowd down in these parts are a scattered bunch that seem to like to stay well hidden. Most of 'em don't talk much, and you might not ever see 'em, but they're there. I've been down here 5 years and I'm noticing more and more fairy wands every year. I think we all just get lost in the masses of conventional fishermen. Can't say that I'm a dedicated Red Man myself, but I do like stalking them if I can't get out on the rocks or offshore.

As far as the rods go, you really can't go wrong with TFO if you are looking for an economy rod. Their customer service is second to none. I really like the TiCr X series. They are super stiff, and I would recommend a 6wt if you are looking for the action of a 7.
Echo also makes a fine rod at an affordable price. I usually carry my Echo Edge 8'4" 8wt if I'm stalking channel bass. Paired with an aggressive tapered line (I throw a Sci. Angler Chard's grand slam), it might as well be a railgun.

Get skinny(knee deep or less) in the grass around mid morning this time of year, and you'll find the reds.

I just left Roy's and picked up a TFO Axiom. They are awesome rods and if you need an 8 wt. they are on sale for 50% off. It came out to $164 with tax. They got a special deal through TFO and it's only on 8 wts. and they only had 2 left. I have a St. Croix I shipped back yesterday to be repaired. It wasn't one of the real high dollar rods but I don't think it should have snapped when it did. I love my TFO BVK and I think I am going to like the Axiom even more.

How did the St. Croix snap?

Manta Ray believe it or not (not a sting ray or a cownose). I was trying to get him on the jetties and it was a lot of pressure, but I don't think I was putting enough to make it snap. It was an Imperial 10 wt. so not a real high end but it does have a lifetime warranty. I replaced it with an Echo 3 saltwater which I really like.

Well... I found a Sage Xi3 6WT 9'-0" 4-pc close-out (probably the last one on earth), so I bought it... Shocked

I'll 7-line it and it will be nice for what I want.

I know for a fact that they have one 7WT left, if anyone is interested.

most of the dedicated fly rodders are pretty tight lipped but there are a ton of guys out there every day with the buggy whips
cant go wrong with a tfo bvk or st croix elite as intro rods
sage one or Helios 2 for the upper end
