Mary and I went to Mustang island this morning before sunrise and was surprised by how rough the surf was. Hit the jetty and caught one small spec. Went back down the beach and put out only one rod with shrimp and fish bites. Did not catch anything. Went back to the jetty and throwing soft plastics and caught a 25 inch black tip on a soft plastic pink shad.

Stopped by SPJ on the way home throwing lures and caught three whiting

Same story for us. One small spec at fish pass, whiting everywhere else on shrimp/fishbites. Switched to cut whiting...caught more whiting.

For most of the morning there were clouds of dusky anchovies from the wade gut to the 2nd bar. Birds were working hard on them on the second bar. We chased them from around the jetty north to markers in the 80's. When we finally decided to brave the surf and wade out to the 2nd bar and cast into the madness, it was nothing but skip jacks, small blue runners and bumper working them. Oh, and a caught a stingray on a gotcha plug. Go figure.

I was wondering if any spanish mackerel were observed. I saw a post on Facebook from Port Aransas with a bunch of them on the beach.

swells will be up to 5ft this weekend and next week so seems like the past few days of calm surf are gone already.
