FINALLY! Got on them!
Headed out after work thanks to the wife who shoved the Surf and tide report in my face, it was go time! Found a nice bowl around 7pm, setup up post and started fishing! The baitfish were going insane! No trout but we were right on top of our favorite. Whiting!

We probably caught about 30 but kept only half. The nice ones kept wiggling out of my damn hand! It was a pain but plenty of fun! Them along with the mullets and other baitfish we no more than 10ft in front of us. My daughter had a blast casting and hooking up her own fish she can finally eat. She was glowing! The wife caught all the bulls, I'll give her the credit Razz Praying the weekend is nice and clear. Going to hit it early and fish all day if it is, until then tight lines!!!

Hey man take it easy on us!

Ive gone too many times trying to chase trout and end up with either hardheads I cant eat, or perch that I can't eat. And these whiting are delicious! I'm in love with them right now, but hey I won't deny a good trout or red either Wink

I was kidding about you guys showing the filleted fish and hence, skinny. Fresh whiting are real good. Frozen, not so much.

Oh I see. Yeah I have been forgetting to post the pre-fillet fish pictures because I always forget to take them! I always feel too in the moment to whip my phone out and snap some. This weekend I promise some excellent pictures though, especially with the kiddos!

I haven't tried freezing whiting fillets but I swear a few posts back, cant remember who, they posted that it holds up pretty well, although I don't really care for freezing fish, just my duck breasts. Which I can't seem to do because it's oh so delicious Smile

Whiting freeze well for me... I catch as many as I can when I go and bag them up into meal size portions. I squeeze lime juice into the ziploc bag of fillets before putting them in the freezer... I caught a load in South Padre in March and just fried a load yesterday and the were great.. Not mushy at all. What doesn't freeze well is sand trout and kingfish.

Whiting are a very hardy fish and freeze very well. My family prefers them over trout and reds ( which is blasphemy to me ) but if the family is happy so am I. Great fish all around

We had a big fish fry of trout two weeks ago. My brother in law thinks he can cook anything. I'll leave it at that. Not too good of an impression of trout for me, but if I had the reins, you already know. He is the hog all my way or the highway type of A-Hole. But hey let him make an embarrassment to himself lol. Next trout I catch will definitely be baked. Oh Yeah!!!! Laughing

Yea, I keep whiting too. Tasty little suckers.

I surf fished Mustang island yesterday from 1:00pm to dark. I caught a ton of whiting. That tide sure got low. I got covered up in pup Black Tip sharks at about 6pm. I caught 15. I did catch three Black Tip over 2'. I saw a few decent schools of pony mullet. Caught one skip jack.

It was so beautiful out there.

OK, time for this 60 year old to learn something.

How do you guys freeze your whiting for them to stay good and firm?

In water or just in a bag with the air squeezed out?

I am all ears... Thanks in advance.

I do mine in a bag with water then squeeze all the air out. They freeze well for me.
