This one caught me sleeping. The Texas DMV is telling me I have to get my trailer inspected before I can renew my plates. Representative told me that has always been the case, but it was never really enforced up until the new two-step inspection/plate renewal rule came along.

Fastrack in the Bluff says they look at tires and working trailer lights. Trailer lights that WORK????

I ran into this recently....the deal is that you have to have your boat (or 5th wheel trailer) inspected if the trailer and load weight is over 4500 lbs....most trailer manufacturers put the MAXIMUM load weight on the paperwork, which most double axle trailers are rated for 4500 lbs...you add the weight of the boat, and you're over the limit....the issue is that most boats don't weigh more than 2,000 lbs, and never see 4500 lbs....

so you have to get them to change that in their computer system....aluminum trailers are around 1,100lbs, and galvanized is around 1,700 (again, double axle)....a 21' redfish line majek, a 21' dargel, etc. weighs in around 1200 lbs....

what you do is take you specifications for your boat and trailer (or something similar) that you can get off the manufacturers website, print it out, and take it down there, and show them that the trailer and boat weight is less than 4500lbs....then you won't have to get it inspected....

The only way to adjust any GVW rating is to have the VIN plate and MSO (Manufacturers statement of origin) reissued from the original manufacturer. If the gross vehicle weight says 4500 lbs, then that is the trailer weight with the boat, motor and gear all together. 4500# and under, no inspection+no brakes needed, 4501# and over, inspection+brakes needed.

The tax office is going to go off of what the title says, and the police are going to go off of registration receipt and or the VIN plate.

Hey David.....just mail your check in with the renewal notice. I did and received my registration. No one asked for any type of inspection or sticker.

I'll call Marty at Coastline Trailers tomorrow and see what the State is telling him. I'll let you know.( Via PM) I know he isn't putting brakes on trailers with a 4500# gross. My gross is 5000#, my trailer weight empty is 1000#.

Most all Coastlines under bay boats are rated at 3500lb on their registration paperwork and exempt from the inspection requirement, that's also the reason Marty hasn't been putting brakes on them. Sounds like other manufactures have been rating them north of 4500lbs which is going to cost folks some money to get compliant.

^^^ very much correct. The DMV will go by what the MFG has it rated for or what it you rate it at via buying the tags ...they go with the heavier rating of the 2. For example, 16' utility trailers with 2 each 3500lb axles has a 7k rating. You use to be to register the trailer for less weight to save money. The DMV now will default to the MFG rating since it is the greater of the 2. I believe this law was pass around 2010 or so. I have never seen it enforce on the boat trailer. They were hammering utility trailers right after it went into effect. Good luck

The key word here is "most" I have a Coastline and the GVW says 5000lb.
not anything special about the trailer. It carries a Intimidator. The trailer weight empty is 1000# and the load cap. is 4000#. According to the paperwork.
I'll have to see what Marty has to say about it today.

According to what I read on another site it only takes a few minutes to get the tax office to downgrade the weight on your trailer if you have proof that it is under 4500#. I assume that "proof" would be a weight certificate from a reputable weigh station.

Rebecca of Sunnybrookfarm was able to do exactly what she said and get them to downgrade the overall weight so the trailer did not have to be inspected. Trust me, I did not think it was going to work either but it did. I don't know if it was just dumb luck, a tax office employee who had no clue, or that is the way it is supposed to work but it happened.

this is exactly what they will ask you to do.....which results dragging your stuff in town and in another trip down to the courthouse....I talked nice with them, and had the printout from the website regarding my boat weight, and the trailer weight is actually on the title (they already know empty weight if you bought your trailer new, or bought it from someone that bought it new and transferred title)....I was able to talk them out of having to go get a weight certificate....

I have a Magnum trailer, and it looks like that manufacturer put the rated weight at 4500lbs for all his new trailers....coastline builder was smart....put it as less, as was stated...

The problem is that they did not give me a renewal notice. Only a letter.

Please let me know that Marty has to say.

There is a certified scale at the corner of Corn Products and Leopard. Heads up they only take cash. It was $7.00 or so.
