What are my options for having this reel cleaned and gone through. I know the big name shops here in CC, not sure about other places. Is there anyone in particular thats good with old Penns? I am not confident enough to do it myself.
thank you |

Honestly there's not much to those old reels. If you aren't confident just disassembling it try taking pictures as you go. Document the steps so you know how it went. Lay all your pieces out in order and you are good to go. Little bit of grease, oil, qtips, alcohol, minimal tools and you are good. Try it. It's only intimidating the first time. _________________ Great captains, the stuff of legend, are made not by what they have caught, but by what they have given back. |

I spoke with John and he was not interested due to not having parts. Any other suggestions?
I may try it myself, watched a couple youtube vids on it, does not seem to bad. Is there a specific set of parts(normal wear/tear) I should order in before attempting this? |

Might replace the drag washers.
I replaced my 6/0 with "Smooth Drag" I think was the name. |

I've rebuilt a few Senators. I had never rebuilt any reel before these senators, but if you can understand schematics then check out Scotts Penn Parts. They've got just about every part you'd ever need to order and the schematics for nearly (if not every) penn reel. They are super simple, the hardest part is getting bridge/gears/dog all back together.
Here is the link directly to the 14/0 page. There's a tab for view/print schematic as soon as you open the page.

There are also some great youtube videos out there. Every senator is put together nearly exactly the same, so if you see one for a 12/0 or a 9/0, it's going to be the same idea for the 14/0.
I'd recommened the blue yamalube marine grease for the innards of the reel, and then Cals Tan universal grease for the Drag washers, and make sure you go with the HT-100's for drag washers too! |

^^^^^^^great advice! I've redone my penn lineup from 12/0 down to jigmaster. Granted, it wasn't pretty at first and I had to get a bit creative at times, but that's half of the fun when upgrading these reels. Check out Alan Tani's website as far as rebuilds and upgrades. There's more things to upgrade than you'd believe.
Also, I second the HT-100's and Cal's Reel Grease! _________________ -Pat |
