I am new to this forum and have been living here on the island for about a year now. Last Saturday at 3 pm I was out fishing in Humble channel in my kayak. I was only out for about an hour and landed 4 bull drum from sizes 30-38 inches. Seemed as they were on a feeding frenzy. I went out the next morning to beat the wind and didn't have a single fish besides to sand trout. I saw 3 dolphins arching in the channel 100 yards from me and was wondering if that's why I didn't catch any fish? I've hesrd dolphins scare the fish away. Just wondering what you guys thought.

They will take everything available, including what's on your stringer or line if they are near. One was cruising near me one day while I wade fishing over at Mud Island, and I thought I might better get my stringer in and about the time the stringer got to me, so did the porpoise! His or her nose was about six inches or less from my chest when it turned and left so quickly it left me stunned. Shocked If they are near by you just, as well move somewhere else.

I've caught trout right in with the dolphins. If you're catching sand trout I would guess the lack of drum was probably a coincidence.

Same. Sometimes they join the drift.

Have had them chase the trout all the way to the boat as i was reeling in. Kept on fishing and catching. Just a race to see who was faster me or them.
Get ahead of them and they will push the fish to you.

I have had them push trout in to me while I waited for the jetty boat!
I have watched one flip a flounder like a frisbee for an hour at least I hope it was the same flounder.
They have ripped trout from my line.
I have foul hooked one and blew my reel up!
I have seen a school of a1000+ off Baja

Fish with them it is the coolest thing to watch them feed. A potlicker is far worse

Myself, I look for them. Similar to looking for birds. They are there after SOMETHING.

I've always caught fish around them.

Once upon a time, I was wade fishing near Shamrock Island in waist-deep water. I was catching dinks and hadn't seen a dolphin all morning, when suddenly a dolphin surfaced directly in front of me about 3 feet away. This was the largest dolphin on the planet, much bigger than an oil tanker.
I don't think my heart started beating again until I was in my truck with the doors locked!
Anyway, I think that dolphin still tells his buddies about the day he made a human walk on water....
(By the way, I've never been back to Shamrock again).

Porpoises or Dolphins are a sign of good luck. They have never hurt my fishing. On another note if I were to fall off a vessel in the ocean I would be so happy to be surrounded by dolphins rather than something else with a tall dorsal fin.

Lots of past heated debated on the uncool site about this topic. I have been told that the dolphins are like the proverbial "canary in the coalmine" in that they are evidence of a healthy and sustainable bay system. Of course there are those that call this "nuts" but hey....

In my experience, the more shallow the water the more dolphins ruin your trout bite.

That was a big dolphin! Laughing

WARNING, objects in the water may appear larger than they actually are. Very Happy
