Howdy everyone. Ya know, just when ya think YOU got problems, you look around a lil bit. Ya know-I'm just not even gonna comment on this one.... But just lookie at that grin...
Anyways. Been red tide on and off last week in various locations, so in the boat it was. To chase baitballs and do a little draggin. But last Monday was downright raunchy off the beaches.
The first day being a bit too rough, Tuesday proved better.
The red ball minnows were in full force and balling up in various locations.
The predators weren't far behind.
Needless to say, I lost quite a few lures.
And the Spanish were thicker than thieves. Gorging on the duskies.
And the bonita showed up again as well.
Such pretty colors...
Sushi!
And I kept a few...
And Wednesday proved to be THE day! Dead flat....
And it was time to chase baitballs up and down the Island.
And I took a trip down Island to PINS, but by boat! Something I've always wanted to do.
And hit up a few old 1960s platforms offshore. It's a legs only remaining kinda thing.
And after a few hours bottom fishing offshore and then riding down to the 3, it was time to roll north!
Well anyways, that's a wrap. There's been jacks galore in all those baitballs, but the baitballs were mostly active around the major periods coinciding with moonrise. The duskies would go to the bottom of the water column periodically, causing a lull in the action. My best beach trout rod was broken in half by a 25lb jack on Monday after a 25 minute fight in the winds and seas. My gaff broke in half right at the hook portion as well that day. Won't be taking light tackle along anymore I suppose either after the rod disaster. The bonita were typical bonita, speed racing through the schools of bait and sometimes caught in the blind. Lure of choice for the week was 2oz to 1 oz silver spoons. Treble hooks were causing missed hooksets, so a single J hook setup increased my catch rate. The schools became mostly Spanish on Tuesday and Wednesday. The red tide bloom was obvious starting at the north sticks on Thursday and worsening the further south I went on PINS (in the boat). Not much else to tell-we're under coastal flood advisory right now and seas are forecast to increase to the periodical 11ft level by the end of the week.
You know what means. Go to the end of Bob Hall on the T-head and feel the hair rise up on your head as those rollers wash underneath the deck!
Hope the seas let up soon, it's live mullet time of year doggonit!
Ya'll take care and no beating up family over some "synthetic" weed. Or whatever that is. _________________ Protect Padre at all costs for future generations to use and enjoy and never forget our freedoms aren't free.
What a POS! That's the kind of folks i deal with daily! I better quit my comments there!
Good report! I was on a overnight tuna trip during that time. We absolutely massacred them!!! I wish the beach and weather would straighten up. I could have bet on this though since I'm on vacation. Lol. I may head down tomorrow anyway.
last week was pretty amazing. I ran out wednesday to, and was able to run 40 MPH in my bay boat. found the same things, except I found a school of mahi mixed in with the mackeral about 12 miles offshore. some of the weed patches had tons of little blue runners on them also.

Awesome deal on the Mahi there OFT. I broke down twice last week off the beach so I just couldn't heed the call to get out deeper. Lol.
Doug come on down! I need someone around on PINS during the rain later this week to justify me likely kicking around down there. It's been too long and I miss it. I bet you do as well! _________________ Protect Padre at all costs for future generations to use and enjoy and never forget our freedoms aren't free.

Your pics got me to thinking. I've been wanting to run the surf line down to PINS for a while, what is the protocal on passing Bob Hall? I really don't want to wrap some shark fisherman's rig around my prop. How far off the end is good?
Also, are you the guy with the shrimp net from previous posts? I'd like to find one of those too.

Sorry-been kinda tied up this past week and whatnot. Honestly, if you get within say a half mile, I hate to say it, but you'll see folks waving their arms and going ballistic (from the T head) a good bit of the time. I just stay a half mile to a mile out from the T head when I'm running north or south through there. Take care. _________________ Protect Padre at all costs for future generations to use and enjoy and never forget our freedoms aren't free.

Cant stop reading the posts.
Just awesome. Moving to SA soon will be closest to CC (hometown)
than Ive been in 20 years. Im tired of cedar fever, Austin traffic, West Coasters encroaching and fresh water fishing (not that there's anything wrong with it) I just prefer the salt everything. Keep em coming!
