| I have been gigging a few times this week and gigged one flounder so far. I was just wondering what was the best surface to gig on. Do the flounder like sand or mud or both? I have been mainly trying the shallows next to the grass since my light isn't the greatest. Also what time of night? Right after sundown or later? I have been trying between Port Aransas and Aransas Pass. I don't have a boat so I wade. Thanks, Mel |

I haven't gigged in several years, but from what I recall sandy areas near grass or the edge of channels are the choice areas, especially when wading. I should add, I have never gigged out of a boat. I have even gigged them on grass, but seldom. An incoming tide, when the moon has not risen is best for gigging, and an out going tide for catching them on jigs in drains is what I remember. Hopefully, someone pursuing flounder presently will comment and be more helpful.

| from my limited experience...they seem to like fine sand. Not too hard...easier for them to bury themselves in....close to deeper water. I have not seen too many in mucky mud....but then again...I wouldn't be able to walk to em either....guess that is a question for the flounder boat guys. When I see sand with the ridges from the water movement...I really take my time and start looking. |

Flounder are moving out right now so location, location, location. Your location is a good one for this time of year. Stay on channel edges. When it is real cold, I find more and bigger on the mud but they will be in the sand to.
As for time of night, stay away from big moons in the sky. If it is time of month for big moon, the. Hit before or after it goes down. Not saying they are absent during big moons, I just have not done as well and they seem a little more skittish. Hope this helps. |

Being darker than sand, it may be a hair warmer over the mud...... _________________ Dave
