Well, the day finally came after 2 months of waiting. I had ordered a 2015 14' Hobie Pro Angler Kayak it finally came in a few days ago. Here's a few pictures where we are picking it up at the dealer while they're adding some accessories. The last one is of the maiden voyage. I traveled several miles in a 20 mph wind. Because you pedal it, I was able to fish while going against the wind! That would have been impossible if I were paddling. I love it!

As soon as I build up my stamina and courage, I'd like to try joining a group to one of the closer gas wells for some Red Snapper.

Decals getting put on.

Packed up and ready to head back!

The maiden voyage! I caught a few trash fish, but no keepers Saturday. I'll try again Monday.

I believe that is Barrett. You know him?

I put a little over 4 miles on it with a 17 mph wind and it was real easy. Didn't hurt my legs one bit.

I love those things. Less of a kayak, more of an all out fishing platform. Envious of your new toy!

Unfortunately I'm on the 3d day of a real bad cold and haven't been able to get out on the kayak. Now with winter weather rolling in tomorrow, it will be a while before I can take it out.

In the meantime I made some rod holders for it out of PVC because Hobie hasn't come out with the rod holders for the H Rail, which is a 10 sided pipe (decagon). I've also added a GPS/Depthfinder combo in preparation for when I can take it out.

First thing I did was to cut a chunk of 4" pipe and stick it in hot oil (325 deg.) until I could unroll it. While still hot, I flattened it out between the counter and a piece of tile. I did a similar process for the rod holder so that the PVC would conform to some of the shape of the H Rail and not roll freely. I added some hose clamps you can tighten with your fingers. The whole thing work really well.

How shallow can those go with the fins? Also, how quick can you take the fins out if you want to paddle real shallow?

nofish2day: If you take shorter strokes towards the end of the stroke, the fins are able to propel you even though they just flip a few inches from the hull. If you go ahead and push either pedal to an extreme position (all the way forward or all the way back), the fins hug the bottom of the hull and are not an issue. That's when you pull out the paddle.

There's a good video on this page that shows how they work.
