Way to windy for Baffin Saturday so trucked it to Port A from Bishop. Launched around 9 Saturday morning at the Port A public ramp with live shrimp and a strong and steady NE wind. Went across ship channel to Fina Docks. Caught a lot of butter perch, no Mangrove, no whiting, no sand trout. Caught a few sheepshead but they were all 14". Then BAM !!! 20 minutes later landed this little guy.
Nothing other than the above red at the Fina Docks, then went to the shrimp boat channel(I think that is what it's called) the channel that runs to Aransas Pass to escape the brutal NE wind. Fished the first pass on the left with a bridge on the bottom and caught 2 slot reds and about 40 rats from 8 to 18 inches.
Deer season is upon me, probably will not fish for a while, will post if I do.
Adios and Best Wishes to Cody, could not make tourney but did donate _________________ But you ain't got no legs Lt. Dan, I know that |

| That's not a guy, it's one of the female breeders! I encourage you, if your not going hungry( and I don't think you are:D), let those babies swim! |

What are you tryin to say Bayfly ???? Haha. The only reason i kept HER is we had fished a while and had nothing in the box so i needed some meat to grill. We BBQ'd her that evening and the meat was good not like a big drum. But typically I catch enough to release ones like this but was in foreign waters with tough conditions. _________________ But you ain't got no legs Lt. Dan, I know that |

Per TP&WL, the males don't get that large. I wish there were some genitals hanging out there so we could know for sure, but I'll take TP&WL's word for it. If I can find where the male size cut off is, I'll post back. I realize we can get a tag or two for the oversized(female) reds, but we are only hurting the resource to keep them. Each one represents 100s of thousands of eggs. That is not to say a large portion of the eggs never make it, but that is just more reason to preserve what we can. In other words, be selfish and let the over 28" reds swim.

The number is more like 20-40 million eggs per season for a female red drum that spawns every 1-2 weeks over the course of the spawning season.
Also, I haven't read anything that says all reds over 28" are female. I was looking for that on the TPWD site but couldn't find it. _________________ "Ya'll must eat a lot of fish" |

Since I posted what I have been led to believe for years, I have read online, and corresponded with Mark Fisher of TP&WL about the subject. Mark said the males and females both grow past 28" and mature up to about 30 years of age in our waters, occupying the bays and Gulf at different stages of their life. His explanation was much more detailed, but I've relayed the essence of his comments. My apologies for misleading anyone, as I was until now.
BTW, Mark said there was no way to externally identify whether a red fish is male or female. However, I will add, if one has a large stomach it is probably a female and full of 2 to 3 million eggs! |

It had zero eggs and a huge belly. I was surprised when I cleaned it. _________________ But you ain't got no legs Lt. Dan, I know that |
