We got there at my usual time (dawn) and it was unusually crowded at my honey hole (the end). The tide in the channel was ripping, as has been the case the last few weeks. The newbies near the end had multiple rods out and were not watching most of them, resulting in lots of lines 100 yards from where they thought they were, and missed several bites as a result. One young man and his dad stood at the end casting lures and caught some over sized reds and a solid slot. The problem was, as soon as they landed one, the newbies potlicked them with dead bait on the bottom expecting the same results and effectively killing their casting area. I nailed one oversized red (released). Teacher Fiancee had similar problems with a group near her. They would cast out a deep slide cork and let it drift 100 yards and not watch it, effectively blocking her off.
Jetty ethics - please learn them.
On a side note, it was rather odd to watch the surf being so calm, but the current out of Packery being so strong as to create some really serious waves at the mouth. |

Thanks for the report. Good to hear the bull reds are around and bummer on the bozos.
The floating unattended side-lines are the worst. Just put on a suspending lure with 2 or 3 trebles, cast out, catch their line intentionally 3 times in a row right in front of you, and apologize profusely stating "I'm so sorry, I casted straight out directly in front of me but accidentally crossed your line." By the third time they usually get it and all it takes a few minutes to send the message. _________________ ...if my boss ever finds this forum I'll be unemployed... |

| TFTR. I was going to go out of Packery Saturday but those same waves changed my mind. |

| YES jetty ethics. people need to learn some. 10/26 I just started netting mullet (one cast) and two guys come up behind me and ask I have seen anything. I reply "there are some schools running the edge of the rocks." so the guy decides to hop down three feet from me and throw his net. I was frustrated so I netted my fill and went to fish. I cast out and wait. the same guys come down and set up right down from me (10 yards) and the jetty is not crowded. one of the guys tries the surf side and gets hung up so the switch to channel side. lines drifting, not watching them so I pulled in and left. |

I may have made this point before, but the gregarious nature of most humans often overrides anything else. They LIKE being around other people, so in their minds, why shouldn't you??? Yes there are those who are truly rude and just go out of their way to rain on other's parades, but, I kinda think they are few in number in relation to those who just can't stand to be by themselves!
Same thing goes for the same types who have open beach from horizon to horizon but park RIGHT NEXT to you!!!! It ain't always malicious or even ignorant, they just can't stand to be alone. Still, for those of us with a "large bubble", it sucks big time, and believe me when I say that it's the same on every jetty, pier and beach that I have seen or fished from.
Ahhhh, humanity......... _________________ Dave

I like the way you put that Landlocked. I need a t-shirt that says "I'm a big bubble person" with a picture of a fisherman on a jetty with a 50 foot bubble around him. _________________ ...if my boss ever finds this forum I'll be unemployed... |

Thanks Luke. I DEFINITELY have a BIG BUBBLE !!! Humanity in general makes me tense, and I don't need any help in that department!
I really don't mind someone fishing fairly close by as long as they know their stuff and are polite and ethical. I think that we could fish semi shoulder to shoulder and not get in each other's way, but that is a rarity.
I gave up gun hunting for deer way back in about 95 - 96 and went to bow only for three basic reasons: not nearly enough challenge, way too damn many people in the woods and safety, but by far the middle of those was the kicker. I purposely don't do much early season hunting and NEVER go on weekends because seeing even one other human in the woods ruins my whole day!
Those last two reasons are also why I rarely fish piers or jetties even when I have the chance. I have fished Sebastian Inlet maybe 4 times now and have yet to step foot on the north jetty with a rod, because that is the longer one and has the easiest access even for those "land lubber" types, all of which contribute to the daily madhouse of tangled lines, lost fish and bad tempers! I instead fish the much shorter south jetty, the one that gets no respect. At least there one can find a little solitude and enjoy the fishing, and if they're not biting on the south jetty the same holds true for the north.
B-1 83, not trying to hijack you man. Hope your next jetty trip works out better ! _________________ Dave
