Went surf fishing today, and boy you better stay in the water the flies were bad! Fishing wasn't great, but the sky was blue the water calm. And had we been able to sit and enjoy. The flies laughed when I sprayed on off. And I really hate that stuff. What should I use??? I was thinking skin so soft???? |

I had the same experience today. It was almost a perfect 10 except for those biting flies, and they were thick.
Two cures:
1. Water (as you mentioned)
2. Build a fire and keep it smoking by throwing some dead seaweed on it every once in a while. |

The biting flies were horrible. I will try one of those thermacell mosquito things today...What were you using to catch fish? I was using live mullet on the bottom and didn't get a bite..was in the 1st gut, thought i read they were catching the reds in there last week. |

I am headed to Walmart for a Thermo cell and will let you know if it is better today. I am also taking a fly swatter to get a couple of those suckers back. |

I tried 49% Deet on those flies, and it did not phase them.
I forgot to mention that if not fishing and on beach, you can sit in a chair and elevate your feet off the ground. Doing this kept them from biting. I guess they are afraid of heights. Ha!
Fish were over the first sandbar toward the second yesterday afternoon. |

The Thermacell DID NOT WORK. Unless there is a different insert for biting flies. The flies were actually landing on the thermacell unit. |

As a result of your inquiry and responses, I googled "skin so soft" and learned about an entirely different line of products I have not been familiar with which might be the answer to the biting flies: http://www.homs.com/bioud |

Sorry that the Thermacell didn't work. They claim that it does for biting flies.
I was deer hunting two Saturdays back in a HIGH density horse fly, deer fly and skeeter area and it kept them away well.
At least you have it for the Black Salt Marsh Skeeters: those puppies are NO FUN!!!! _________________ Dave

If I get into a bunch of them I will move down the beach around 100 yards and a lot of times that will fix the problem. Other days especially when it's dead calm you are just screwed. Fishing pants and long sleeves help. |
