Switched to 12 lb. Big game with a 25# floro leader tied to the spook jr. Changed out the stock hooks with Mustad bronze trebles and went to a medium heavy rod. Ene wind made for a good drift down steadman's. Windward side no takers. Leeward side had a first blow up with a solid hookup. Netted the 19.75 red and released. Second blowup 17" red, solid hookup, netted and released. Third blow up, dink trout to the boat and released. So, while making the changes didn't put any in the box, it seemed to certainly improve the catch ratio. Rest of the morning short strikes on the spook. Switched to a gambler. Had a few chasers but no takers. Beat the storm in and home by 12:30. Have a good one. Very Happy

I'm curious as to your reasoning on dropping your mAin line strength while still sticking with mono? That's just more stretch......

Not finding fault, just asking. I know that changing the hooks out helps a lot if you use quality hooks for the swap. Wink

Whatever, I'm glad that your last outing was better, but fish hit aggressively on some days and just slap at topwaters (and other baits) on other days, so one fishing trip doesn't really say much.

Up here in Arkansas I start fishing for bass in the late winter with spring lizards and paddle tail type baits. On some days I get many hard hits but can't hook a fish or keep one hooked for longer than a few seconds, then a day or two later I fish the same spots with the same baits at the same speeds using the same techniques and just hammer the fish....... Because they are actually hungry and sucking the whole bait in instead of instinctively swiping at it when it passes into their chase/don't chase zone.

I went for a smaller diameter mainline, from 15 to 12, but compensated by going with a medium heavy rod. I feel that the fish I have lost in the recent past have been because of the lighter rod. Today, I had full control, well maybe Very Happy , with the heavier rod. I'm an old artificial worm, lizard, jig and pig fisherman, and I've paid my dues fishing tops and spinner baits with and without trailer hooks around all kinds of structure. But down here, I've always fished live bait normally under a cork. Now, I'm trying to learn arties in the salt. Alot of the folks around here use braid, and that's fine. I like mono and feel that working with the stretch might be OK too. So, I went lighter with the mainline, compensated with the rod, and uni knotted the floro to the mono. The setup felt good on the hookups.

12 lb. main line and 20 lb. leader is all I ever use. I throw top water a lot. Love to set that hook. Med- heavy rod is my choice. I have never lost a fish where I could blame the line leader or rod. Sad
Y I have lost a few.
