Make sure you get one with real lead. The one that I got at Walmart has some kindof imatation leads and they leave rust stains practically everywhere........

Calusa makes good nets. Kinda pricey. They lay flat and actually use panels. Make sure the weight is adequate for your intended purpose. The heavy ones are designed for deep water. Some nets are too heavy and are exhausting to handle. _________________ Cudakilla.com

Mepps old salt is the best for the price IMO.
They sell one with extra lead over at Roys

Like the old saying goes; you get what you pay for. If you pay less than $100 for a 7' net, it will not be up to par, throw well, etc. I own four: 5, 7, 7 and 10 footers. I use the 10 footer in florida on occasion because they are legal there, but not the last time that I checked for Texas
My 10 footer was bought at Bass Pro in Destin for $129.99, many years ago. If I do my part, it throw excellently! My old 7 footer was bought at Walmart for about $40. It throws okay most of the time, but doesn't always close evenly, etc. The 5 footer is a creek, small river in the rocks net, so it's cheap! The other 7 footer was bought at Bass Pro in Port Saint Lucy FL last May. I bought it in a 1/4" mesh size because all the others were 3/8", and I was wearing myself out and catching nothing down there even when covering schools of small bait. That net was $99.99, and believe me when I say that it was hard to let go of the coin!
This net has more lead per foot than the Cheapo 7 footer, and when combined with the smaller mesh I was INSTANTLY clobbering the bait, including shrimp!!!!! It throws like a dream, opens great, sinks fast and closes dependably. All that a cast net is supposed to do........ but don't expect that in a cheap net!
Oh yeah, I just remembered something important: The rated mesh size is for the square, but remember that when those squares are pulled diagonally they get longer on the load path and narrower at 90 degrees, until they close completely. This means that a 3/8" net's mesh will be 3/4" x 0", but that 0 opens easily!!!!!!
For fish that are compressed side to side and relatively tall vertically like pinfish, bunker and such, a 3/8" mesh will loose most of the smaller ones and gill snag those a tad larger, a real PITA! I REALLY LIKE the 1/4" mesh, should have done it years ago! _________________ Dave

| Between the mono or nylon mesh, which is preferred and why? Thanks in advance for your input. |

Me thinks that there is a tad of marketing hype there. "Monofilament" is made from Nylon unless otherwise specified. Fluorocarbon line is a mono "single filament" too, but it's just called "Fluorocarbon" while Nylon lines have always been called "Monofilament". _________________ Dave

Do not buy environmentally whatever castnets. They are not lead; rather, they are some kind of metal coated. The sand eats the coating off, the metal slices your castnet. They also do not sink very fast.
The bait stands are all about the same price. A 5 footer will run about $50.00, but consider the use. I use a net a year and use my cast net all the time. For $50.00, I get a net that is reasonably priced, catches bait, last a year or two, and then I have the lead to make sinkers when it is time to retire it
The $50.00 net last as good as the $100.00.
Hope this helps. |

How are cast nets sold/measured by the radius or by the diameter. So is a 7 foot net 3.5 radius or is it 14 feet diameter??
Interesting net from UK on Ebay item NR 311066373113 _________________ Gary J
